Kudo’s to Cross

Word came last week from a proud parent that the Western Kentucky University Hilltoppers had added an Albany native, Martin Cross, to it’s coaching lineup for men’s basketball.

Martin, who has spend the past four years on the bench with the Hilltoppers as a student manager, will join the coaching ranks for the Big Red as an assistant coach, specifically charged with the task of being Video Coordinator for the program.

Congrats to Martin, as well as to his proud parents, David and Jennifer Cross.

Martin attended high school in neighboring Russell County where he played basketball and baseball.

A front page article appears this week giving more details about the development in Martin’s first coaching hire in what he hopes will be a long and successful career on the hardwood sidelines.

Of course Martin won’t be the only presence on the WKU sidelines this winter when the men’s Hilltoppers take the court. Clinton County Bulldog standout and currently the all-time leading scorer, Keifer Dalton will be playing for the Toppers this season as well.

Dalton joined the team as a walk-on guard after graduating last year from CCHS. A second-hand report that came from Martin last week noted that Keifer had been playing very well in practice and should be getting some valuable playing time when the season gets underway.

Both Martin and Keifer have been busy with practice, getting ready for the upcoming season, as well as working the WKU summer youth basketball camps.

I’ve enjoyed looking for Martin on the sidelines for the past few years whenever I catch a WKU game on television and it should be fun for that to continue.

Congrats to Martin.

Mike Anders Fore The Kids tournament this Saturday

There should be plenty of activity at the Seventy Six Falls Country Club this Saturday with the annual Mike Anders Memorial Fore the Kids benefit golf tournament.

The annual tournament is a fund-raising event that benefits our varsity golf programs at CCHS as well as paying tribute to former Golf Dawgs Coach Mike Anders, who perished in an airplane crash in Florida in 2013.

Entry fee is $50 per player and will include an all you can eat lunch the day of the tournament. A check-in time of 9:00 a.m. with a 10:00 a.m. shotgun start will get things going that morning.

Additional information or to pre-register, contact Pat Campbell (606-306-1305), Fredrick Honeycutt (606-688-1965) or Nick Irwin (606-688-0731).

Sid continues to improve, still

Long-time Voice of the Bulldogs on WANY, Sid Scott, is still making gains in his continuing battle with a severe case of pneumonia.

Lynn Starnes, Sid’s daughter, tells me this week that Sid has been moved out of the Cookeville hospital and is now in an area rehab center, and his condition continues to improve.

She noted that with his improvements, he was able to finally enjoy the taste of a fresh picked homegrown tomato this past week.

Sid has never been bashful when it comes to enjoying something good to eat.

Again, Lynn expressed the families’ appreciation for the thoughts, prayers and well-wishes during Sid’s illness and recovery!
