Clinton County Sheriff Jim Guffey stood with evidence collected in a drug bust last week. The case saw four people arrested and booked on various charges with more charges pending.

The Clinton County Sheriff’s office made headway in two cases that led to the arrest of several people from Clinton County.

The first case was theft related at the residence of Gene and Martha Hunter on the Grider Hill Dock Road.

“He (Hunter) had approximately six to eight thousand hand tools taken,” Sheriff Jim Guffey said. “There were sockets, wrenches and stuff like that. Through the investigation, it was determined that Larry Thompson and Josh Sparks were involved.”

Guffey said he notified neighboring Wayne County police and had officers be on the lookout for items that might be taken to local pawn shops.

“Sparks had went to Turner’s Pawn Shop and sold some hand tools … 25 or 30 wrenches for $10. You are not going to sell that may hand tools for $10,” Guffey said.

The tools in question were photographed and sent to Guffey where they were identified as Hunter’s tools.

“I apprehended Larry (Thompson) on the same morning, the 28th of July, and he told me where the rest of the tools were,” Guffey said. “Myself and Mr. Hunter went to Wayne County and got the majority of his tools back. He is still missing some, but the majority of the tools were recovered. He is still missing around $2,000 worth of tools.”

Thompson was arrested and charged with burglary in the third degree, criminal mischief in the first degree, and theft by unlawful taking above $500 but less than $10,000. Guffey said all of the charges were Class D felonies. Each charge carries one to five years in jail.

Guffey also said he hasn’t apprehended Sparks at the moment, but he does have an active warrant out for his arrest.

Guffey said the investigation is ongoing and more charges could be pending.

The Clinton County Sheriff’s Department also made drug related arrests on Thursday, July 30.

Guffey said he received a call from parole officer Matt Aaron who located two marijuana plants during a routine home visit at Jonathan A. Stuber’s residence in Albany.

Stuber, 27, was arrested with William Stuber, 18, Julie D. Tucker, 31, and Candie A. Stuber, 25, all of Albany.

Charges for those who were arrested were: cultivating marijuana less than five plants, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a control substance (meth), possession of marijuana, and trafficking in marijuana

Tucker was also charged with tampering with physical evidence.

Guffey said more charges will be pending and the investigation is still ongoing.

Constables Rick Stearns and Gilbert Daniel, as well as probation and parole, assisted in the investigation.
