A Clinton County Jail inmate found freedom to be short-lived, and in fact, the possibility of extended incarceration looming, following a brief jail escape from the facility late last Tuesday afternoon.

According to jail officials and citation reports, inmate Larry Thompson was among three inmates who had made an appearance in court and was being returned to the jail from the courthouse by a deputy jailer.

Apparently, after being unshackled and while the jail employee was unshackling another inmate, Thompson bolted out the back door of the jail on foot, prompting an immediate chase by jail officials and other local law enforcement officers who were notified.

According to the citation, Thompson’s escape occurred at 3:42 p.m. and some 24 minutes later, the situation had ended when he was apprehended in the area of Abston Street in east Albany by deputy jailer Jonathan Branham.

Thompson was originally incarcerated on charges of third degree burglary, criminal mischief and theft by unlawful taking over $500 but less than $10,000, and was in jail on a $10,000 bond, according to jail officials.

After being apprehended, Sheriff Jim Guffey cited Thompson with additional charges of second degree escape, disorderly conduct and menacing. He is to be arraigned in Clinton District Court on the new charges on next Tuesday, August 18, according to officials.

The brief search for Thompson also involved members of the Clinton County Sheriff’s Department and Albany Police Department.
