Clinton County Sheriff Jim Guffey has made several arrests in two related cases involving stolen trailers.

Guffey said he arrested Elmer Gene Neal, Chris Posey and Jamie Posey on several counts of theft.

On Saturday, August 22, Guffey said he received a call from dispatch around 8 a.m. stating Rick Parrish had called in about his missing trailer.

According to Guffey’s statement, a neighbor called Parrish to notify him of the theft and in turn, Parrish called the police.

“The witness described a white SUV with dark tinted windows, pulled to his (Parrish’s) residence and hooked up to a 16 foot trailer and headed south,” Guffey said. “I put out a BOLO for the vehicle and started calling all the surrounding counties. About an hour and a half later, I received a call from Fentress County, TN., that they had the vehicle located at Wal-Mart.”

According to Guffey, Fentress County police officers took the subjects in question back to the police department for interviews.

Guffey said the investigation revealed the subjects had sold the trailer to a pawn shop in Fentress County for $650.

“I went over there and assisted them in the investigation,” Guffey said. “We went back and confiscated the trailer and while I was there I also noticed a trailer resembling the description of the one that had been stolen Sunday.”

A week prior, Welby L Holsapple of Albany reported two men in a dark green Toyota came to his residence asking about working on a barn. In a police report, Holsapple said the two men were looking around his house. After they had left, Holsapple realized a 16-foot trailer with a car ramp on the back, was missing along with several items that were loaded on the trailer.

Those items included a 60 horsepower Evinrude boat motor, restaurant equipment including a four burner stove, 250 gallon lobster tank, soup warmer, soup pots and a milk cooler, all valued at $6,800.

Guffey said according to the pawn shop owner the same person sold him both trailers.

“The pawn shop owner gave me a description of the other guy who was with him and it turned out to be Elmer Gene Neal,” Guffey alleged. “Neal and Chris Posey are the two who sold the trailer which was taken last Sunday, August 16. Posey and partner Jamie Posey are the two who sold the trailer on Saturday.”

Guffey also said Chad Ledbetter was also arrested and charged with receiving stolen property. According to Guffey, Ledbetter had allegedly sold the boat motor which was on Holsapple’s trailer.

“Everything has been recovered that was stolen with the exception of the boat motor,” Guffey said.

Both Chris and Jamie Posey were arrested and charged with criminal trespassing in the third degree and theft by unlawful taking over $500 (Class D Felony). Guffey said Chris Posey was also charged in the theft of Holsapple’s trailer, which included theft by unlawful taking under $10,000 (Class C Felony). Neal was also arrested and charged with the same charge.

All three suspects are lodged in the Clinton County Jail on $10,000 cash bond.

Guffey said the investigation is still ongoing.
