Somerset Community College (SCC) Cosmetology program students taking classes at the SCC Clinton Center recently competed in two SCC International Festival Cosmetology competitions. Winners were selected by festival attendees. Competitions were held at the SCC Clinton Center in Albany, and the SCC Russell Center in Russell Springs.

Winners from the SCC Clinton Center competition were, from left: Jessica Hancock, Wayne County, fourth place; Summer Hopper, Burkesville, first place; Makayla Marcum, Clinton County, and Lakisha Downey, Russell Springs, third place; and Seychelle Harlan, Clinton County, second place.

According to Joni Upchurch, associate professor of Cosmetology at SCC, all the students were assigned a different country as part of their classes.

“The students had to do research on hair styles, make up, currency, fashion and anything else related to our profession,” said Upchurch. “It was a lesson in cultural knowledge that they had to recreate to demonstrate their understanding.”
