Lady Dawgs drop two district games

The Clinton County Lady Dawgs dropped two games last week, both to district opponents and lost in its holiday tournament at Hopkins County Central on Monday night.

On Tuesday, December 15, the Lady Dawgs hosted Cumberland County in a game that came down to the wire, but the Lady Dawgs were unable to come out on top, 48-44.

On Friday, Clinton County traveled to Russell County, that turning into a lopsided loss, 58-28.

With the loss Friday night, Clinton County moved to last place in the district with three district losses, and an overall record of 1-7 before Monday night’s game at the Lady Storm United Mine Workers of America Classic at Hopkins County Central. After Monday’s game against Graves County, Clinton County’s record moved to 1-8 with the 59-34 loss.

The Lady Dawgs participated in the Lady Storm United Mine Workers of America Classic at Hopkins County Central this week with the possibility of four games over the three day period of the tournament.

Monday night, Clinton County took on Graves County which resulted in a 59-34 loss for the Lady Dawgs.

During the first quarter, Clinton County put up eight points to Graves County’s 13. Down by only five points going into the second quarter, Clinton County maintained its competition and posted 10 points in the second quarter compared to Graves County’s 12 to trail at the half, 25-18.

The third quarter is where things got out of hand for Clinton County as Graves County posted 26 points during the period while the Lady Dawgs only added seven to the score board.

Down by seven going into the quarter, Clinton County found itself down by 26 points, 51-25.

That quarter proved to be too much for Clinton County to come back from as the Lady Dawgs outscored Graves 9-8 in the final period, but lost the game, 59-34.

Tuesday, December 15, Cumberland County came to The Castle for the first meeting between the two teams this season.

Clinton County started off on the right foot, scoring the first three baskets of the game, one basket from Allie Hopper as well as a free throw and a basket from Sam Flowers, 5-2.

Cumberland County then hit a field goal to cut the lead to one, but Kayla Dicken scored a basket to grab a 7-4 lead with five minutes on the clock.

The Lady Panthers then cut the lead to one again, but Dicken added a bucket at the 3:19 mark to move ahead by three, 9-6.

Cumberland County then put together a 6-0 run to finish the quarter with a three point lead, 12-9, over the Lady Dawgs.

As the second quarter got underway, Cumberland County continued to take control of the game.

The Lady Panthers added to it’s first quarter run with five more points before Macy Campbell would stop the bleeding with a basket at the 6:35 mark, 17-11.

Dicken then added back-to-back goals to cut the lead to two points, 17-15, but two goals by the Lady Panthers extended its lead to six, 21-15.

Cori Langford hit a field goal at the 3:51 mark, followed by a free throw by Rylee Stockton to cut the Lady Panther’s lead to three points, 21-18.

Cumberland County answered with a basket for a 23-18 lead. Clinton County cut the lead to three on a basket from Stockton, but a free throw from Cumberland County put the Lady Panthers up by four points with 31 seconds on the clock.

Just before the buzzer sounded, Allie Hopper made a goal to cut the lead to two points, 24-22 at the half.

During the third quarter, Clinton County tied the game on a basket, but Cumberland County scored on the next possession for a two point advantage, 26-24.

Clinton County’s Dicken and Langford combined for two baskets to take a two point lead, 28-26, with 4:26 on the clock.

Cumberland County then scored six unanswered points for a 32-28 lead, but with 2:10 on the clock, Stockton scored, along with two foul shots from Langford to tie the game at 32.

Cumberland County would hit two free throws for a two point lead with 1:31 remaining in the quarter, but a three pointer by Campbell put the Lady Dawgs on top at the end of the third, 35-34.

Campbell scored a three point play at the 5:55 mark to move up by four points, 38-34, but Cumberland County came back and cut the lead to one, 38-37.

Dicken hit a field goal to put the Lady Dawgs up by three with 3:49 remaining in the game, but a foul shot by the Lady Panthers cut the lead to two points.

Dicken again took the ball to the goal and scored by getting fouled, hitting both free throws, 42-38, followed by one of two at the line for a 43-38 lead, with about two minutes of play remaining.

Cumberland then scored a three point play, followed by another three point play to take a one point lead, 44-43 with 1:15 remaining.

The Lady Panthers were fouled, hitting two from the line for a three point lead, 46-43. Alexis Roberts hit a free throw to cut the lead to two points, 46-44, but that would be the end of scoring for Clinton County as it’s final shot was off the mark and the buzzer sounded, 48-44.

The Lady Dawgs traveled to Russell County Friday night to take on the Lady Lakers in what turned out to be a 30 point loss for the Lady Dawgs, 58-28.

During the first quarter, Clinton County found itself only down by five points, 11-6. Clinton County shot 21 percent in the first half, compared to Russell County’s 39 percent.

The second quarter saw Clinton County score nine points in the eight minute period while Russell County put up 15 for a 24-15 lead.

As the second half got underway, Clinton County cut the lead to five points on back to back to back goals, 26-21. Russell County answered with a three pointer, but Langford hit a field goal to get to within six points, 29-23.

Russell County regained control of the game and finished the third quarter with a 40-23 lead.

The fourth quarter saw Clinton County struggle from the floor, only putting up five points for the entire eight minutes.

Russell County added 18 points to the board to finish with a strong 30 point win, 58-28.

Clinton County spent time at Hopkins County Central before Christmas with three games on the schedule.

Sam Flowers went in for a layup Tuesday night, December 15, against Cumberland County. The Lady Dawgs lost the game by a final score of, 48-44.
