Lady Dawgs move to 1-12 on the year

The Lady Dawgs moved its record to 1-11 after their outing at the Lady Storm United Mine Workers of America Classic at Hopkins County Central last week.

Clinton County, as reported in last week’s edition, lost its first game to Graves County, 59-34, fell to Christian County, 48-37, lost by one point to Todd County Central, 47-46 and was defeated by Franklin-Simpson, 36-31 in overtime.

This week, the Lady Dawgs are at home to host the Best of the Lakes Holiday Classic. Clinton County’s first game came against Red Boiling Springs in a game that saw Clinton County with a chance to take the lead late in the game, but as the shots failed to go in during the final mintues, Clinton County lost the game, 55-49, and move its record to 1-12 on the year.

The Lady Dawgs came out strong in the opening game of the Best of the Lakes Holiday Classic Monday night against Red Boiling Springs as Macy Campbell scored the first two baskets for the Lady Dawgs, 4-0.

Red Boiling Springs hit a free throw to cut the lead to three points, but another field goal by Campbell put the Lady Dawgs up by five, 6-1, with 5:50 on the clock.

Red Boiling Springs then started to add points to the board and took the lead with 24 seconds remaining in the first quarter, 10-9.

Clinton County finished the quarter with two free throws by Campbell to trail by only one, 12-11.

During the second quarter, Clinton County went cold from the floor as Red Boiling Spring went on an 11-4 run to lead 23-15 with 3:16 remaining in the half.

Clinton County finished the half scoring only four points as Red Boiling Springs put up five for a 28-19 score at the half.

As the second half got underway, Clinton County was still struggling from the floor. Head Coach Darrell Thompson was called for a technical foul as Clinton County couldn’t get a break.

By the end of the third quarter, Clinton County trailed by 16 points, 43-27.

At the start of the fourth quarter, Clinton County started to fight its way back, scoring seven unanswered points to cut the lead to nine points, 43-34.

With two minutes remaining, Campbell hit a three pointer to cut the lead to 10 points, 51-41. Allie Hopper then hit two free throws to get to within eight points, 51-43 with 1:07 on the clock.

Red Boiling Springs hit a free throw to extend the lead to nine, but with 40 seconds remaining, Hopper dropped in a three pointer to cut the lead to six points, 52-46.

Clinton County fouled on the inbounds pass and sent Red Boiling Springs to the foul line and hit one of two to extend the lead to seven points with 31 seconds remaining.

With 21 seconds on the clock, Gabby Beaty hit a three pointer to cut the lead to four points, but that was as close as the Lady Dawgs would come as Red Boing Springs hit two free throws with six seconds remaining to claim the win, 55-49.

Franklin-Simpson 36 OT

Clinton County faced Franklin-Simpson in the final game of the Christmas tournament in what turned out to be a tight game that needed an extra four minutes to decide a winner.

The Lady Dawgs fell behind in the first quarter, 10-6 and only scored two points in the second quarter while Franklin-Simpson put up 10 for a 20-8 deficit.

Clinton County scored 11 in the third period while holding Franklin-Simpson to only five points to cut the lead to six points.

During the final period, Clinton County held Franklin-Simpson to four points while putting up 10 points to tie the score at 29 and force overtime.

During the overtime period, Clinton County only managed to score two points while Franklin-Simpson scored seven to take the win, 36-31.

Todd County Central 47

The third game for Clinton County came against 4th Region opponent Todd County Central.

The Lady Dawgs led after the first quarter, 15-13 and led at the half 23-22.

The game continued to remain close during the third quarter as both teams were sitting on 33 points by the end of the third.

During the fourth quarter, Clinton County scored 13 points while Todd County put up 14 to take the one point win, 47-46.

Christian County 48

Clinton County’s second game of the Christmas tournament at Hopkins County Central was against Christian County.

The Lady Dawgs took an early lead in the first quarter, 14-5, but Christian County put up 17 points in the second quarter, compared to Clinton County’s three points for a 22-17 lead at the half.

Both teams put up nine points in the third quarter for a 31-26 Christian County lead and during the final quarter, Christian County posted 17 points to Clinton County’s 11 to take the 48-37 win over the Lady Dawgs.

Clinton County was at home this week, hosting the Best of the Lakes Holiday Classic. Clinton County took on Presentation and Beechwood on Tuesday and played Clay County on Wednesday. Those games and highlight swill be in next week’s edition of the Clinton County News.
