Dawgs fall to Glasgow, Russell

The Bulldogs traveled to Glasgow Monday night to take on the Scotties in the opening round of the 4th Region All “A” Classic Tournament.

The game came down to the wire when a last second attempt to send the game into overtime by Brett Gibson missed the mark and Clinton County fell, 66-63.

The Clinton County Bulldogs moved into second place in the district seeding with a win against Cumberland County Tuesday night and a loss against Russell County Friday night.

Clinton County’s record in district play is 4-2 on the year.

The Bulldogs opened Monday night’s first round game of the All “A” Classic Regional with the first basket by Langford in the first 10 seconds.

Glasgow answered and took the lead on a three pointer, 3-2, but a field goal by Summers put the Dawgs back on top by one, 4-3.

Monday night’s game was close the entire way, seeing 22 lead changes during the entire game.

By the end of the first quarter, both teams were battling on both ends of the floor. Clinton County managed to put together a 4-0 run at the end of the period to move ahead by one point, 16-15 to start the second quarter.

During the second quarter, Clinton County and Glasgow continued to go back and forth with the lead.

No lead by either team was greater than three points during the period with Clinton County leading by two at the half, 28-26.

Clinton County started the third quarter with a 6-0 run to grab the largest lead of the game at eight points, 34-26.

Glasgow came back and put together a 9-0 to take a one point lead, 37-36.

With the Dawgs down by one at the 2:05 mark in the third quarter, 41-40, Gibson hit the team’s first three pointer of the night for a two point lead, 43-41.

Jamison Summers hit two free throws to put the Dawgs up by four, but five straight points from Glasgow saw the Scotties take a one point lead at the end of the period, 46-45.

The final quarter saw both teams continuing to battle on the hardwood.

Neither team reached any higher than a three point lead during the fourth quarter and during the final minutes, both teams gave it everything they had.

With 45 seconds on the clock, Summers tied the score from the foul line on two of two, 61-61. Glasgow missed a shot on its next possession, but got the rebound and made a putback to take a two point lead, 63-61.

With 15 seconds remaining, Summers hit two big free throws to tie the score at 63.

As the seconds tick away, Glasgow had the ball with 6.3 remaining. The Scotties hit a player on the baseline and while driving to the goal, was fouled while making the basket.

The Scotties converted the three point play to take a three point lead, 66-63.

Clinton County’s final attempt to send it into overtime was a shot by Gibson that narrowly missed, sending Clinton County home with the three point loss, 66-63.

As Russell County came into town Friday night, a Clinton County win could mean a tie for the top spot in the district, depending on Russell County’s remaining district play. Russell County defeated Clinton County in its previous matchup, so a Bulldog win would put both teams with one district loss for the year.

Clinton County didn’t pick up that win Friday night, which secured the number two seed for Clinton County when the district tournament rolls around in February.

Friday night’s game started good for Clinton County as the Dawgs trailed by only two points at the end of the first quarter, 13-11.

For much of the second quarter, Clinton County worked from behind, trailing by as much as 14 points with 1:15 on the clock. Clinton County finished the quarter and headed into the locker room with a 12 point deficit, 35-23.

During the second half, Clinton County never found its rhythm and continued to fall behind the Lakers. With 3:30 remaining in the period, Russell County reached a 20 point lead, 49-29. The Dawgs finished the quarter with the same 20 point deficit, 53-33.

The fourth quarter went much the same way with the Dawgs struggling of offense and struggling even more on defense.

Russell County picked up the win and Clinton County was handed it’s seventh loss of the season, second against Russell County, 64-41.

Tuesday night’s game against Cumberland County saw Clinton County dominate from the tip to the final buzzer, as the Dawgs won, 62-43.

Kyle Choate had the hot hand during the first half, hitting two three pointers in the first quarter and two in the second quarter.

At the end of the first quarter, Clinton County grabbed a 10 point lead, 16-6.

The second quarter saw Clinton County extend its lead and with 1:30 remaining in the half, Choate banked in his fourth three pointer for a 29-14 lead.

The Dawgs finished the half with five more points to head into the locker room with a comfortable 34-19 lead over the Panthers.

To open the second half, Clinton County put together a 6-0 run to grab a 21 point lead, 40-19. Cumberland County scored on the next possession, but that basket was answered by Colin Langford with a two pointer of his own, 42-21.

Clinton County finished the quarter with an all around scoring effort, including two three pointers by Jeffery Collins in the final minute of the period. The Dawgs headed into the fourth quarter with a 24 point lead, 54-30.

The final quarter saw Clinton County slack a bit on offense and defense, however, the Dawgs held on for the win, 62-43.
