Lady Dawgs win against Cumberland

Clinton County will not be moving on though the ranks of the All “A” Classic Tournament this season after a first round loss Monday night against Glasgow, 65-36.

The Lady Dawgs added a win to it’s season Tuesday night as Clinton County traveled to Cumberland County to take on the Lady Panthers.

Clinton County won the game 40-36 and with that, picked up win number two on the year.

The Lady Dawgs also hosted Russell County Friday night. Despite the 69-43 loss to the Lady Lakers, Clinton County’s Kayla Dicken came off the bench to score four points, which put her into the 1,000 point club for her career.

Also seeing some action on the hardwood for the first time this season was Joelie Hicks. Hicks, as well as Bree Boils, has been sidelined due to ACL injuries sustained last year.

In what was a rematch from last year’s All “A” Classic Regional finals, which saw Clinton County defeat Glasgow and move on to the state tournament, this year’s game went in a little different direction for the Lady Dawgs.

Glasgow came out of the gate and quickly took control of the game, scoring 18 points in the first quarter compared to Clinton County’s four.

Clinton County started making baskets in the second quarter, but the Lady Scotties outscored the Lady Dawgs by two for a 32-16 halftime lead over Clinton County.

During the third quarter, the Lady Dawgs continued to struggle on offense and defense as the Lady Scotties put up 20 points compared to Clinton County’s 12 for a 52-28 lead.

The final score for the game saw the Lady Dawgs end up with 36 as Clinton County put up eight points in the quarter while Glasgow put up 13 for a 65-36 final.

The Lady Dawgs hosted Russell County to wrap up regular season district play Friday night.

Clinton County didn’t start off on a good note as the Lady Lakers jumped out to a 10-0 lead before the Lady Dawgs’ would score.

At the 3:56 mark, Cori Langford made a three point play to cut the lead to seven, but a three pointer by Russell County extended it’s lead back to 10 points, 13-3 with 3:40 remaining in the first quarter.

Russell County continued to remain in control of the game and finished the first eight minutes with a 21-6 lead.

To start the second quarter, Clinton County added four unanswered points, 21-10. Russell County then scored to extend the lead, but a basket by Kayla Dicken cut the lead to 11, 23-12.

At the 4:35 mark, Russell County scored another basket to move ahead, 27-12, but with 4:18 remaining, Dicken hit her second basket of the game which marked her 1,000th career point.

Clinton County would only score four more points in the half as Russell County led at the break, 34-18.

As the second half got underway, Russell County put together a 13-0 run to extend its lead to 47-18.

The Lady Dawgs managed to finish the quarter by putting nine points on the board to trail 54-27 at the end of the third.

The final eight minutes of the game went much like the previous three as Russell County held on to its lead.

The Lady Dawgs couldn’t get anything rolling for a comeback as the Lady Lakers defeated Clinton County, 69-43.

The Clinton County Lady Dawgs came out in rare form Tuesday night as the team traveled to Cumberland County to take on the Lady Panthers.

Clinton County jumped out to a 5-0 lead before Cumberland County would score its first points at the 4:16 mark.

The Lady Dawgs continued to control the game and remained strong on defense, holding the Lady Panthers to only six points in the quarter, 9-6.

During the second quarter, Clinton County continued to put points on the board while holding Cumberland County on the defensive end.

At the 5:12 mark, a basket by Macy Campbell put Clinton County up by nine points, 15-6.

Cumberland County scored four straight points to cut the lead to five, but a 5-0 run by the Lady Dawgs put Clinton County back up by nine, 19-10.

With 1:11 remaining in the half, Cumberland County hit a three pointer to cut the lead to six, but a foul shot and basket by Cori Langford put Clinton County back up by nine, 22-13.

Cumberland County would add two points to the board before the half to send both teams into the locker room with Clinton County hanging on to a seven point lead, 22-15.

At the start of the third quarter, Cumberland County started to find the basket more and put together a 10-6 run to cut the lead to three, 28-25.

Allie Hopper hit a free throw to push the lead to four points, but a basket by the Lady Panthers cut the lead to two, 29-27.

The Lady Dawgs finished strong with a three pointer by Campbell, 32-27.

As the fourth quarter got underway, Cumberland County made a 5-0 run to take its first lead of the game, 33-32.

Clinton County answered with a 6-0 run to take back the lead, 38-33.

Cumberland County made one last push and cut the Lady Dawgs’ lead to two points, 38-36, with 37 seconds remaining.

With 27 seconds, Cumberland County fouled Campbell and sent her to the line. She hit one of two for a three point lead, 39-36.

In the final 10 seconds, without scoring on its possession, Cumberland County fouled Hopper, sending her to the line for two shots. Hopper made only one, but the four point lead was enough to grab the win, 40-36.

1,000 and counting …

Senior forward Kayla Dicken scored her 1,000th point with this basket during Friday night’s game against Russell County. She finished with eight points.

Joelie Hicks was able to play several minutes Friday night after being sidelined all season with an ACL injury. She was, however, taken out of the game after a fall. No word from officials yet to when she will be back on the floor for Clinton County
