Snowmageddon plays havoc with roundball schedules

For those of us who can see all of the snow we want by tuning into the weather channel and waiting for the Colorado forecast, this past weekend was a miserable experience to say the least.

Can’t get outside without taking the risk to life and limb, basketball games cancelled, postponed and done all of that again, with the uncertainty of just what will be eventually made up and what won’t.

Games that were to be played over the weekend with the Lady Dawgs (Russellville) and the Bulldogs (Jackson County) were cancelled, and whether or not they will even be made up is yet to be determined. When you start looking at open dates on the calendar, then try to work in a window for not just one, but both teams involved, sometimes it just won’t happen.

The Bulldogs were set to play Campbellsville on Monday night. That game was moved to Tuesday night, making the event on Tuesday a double header with McCreary Central girls. Then comes word that McCreary still can’t make it over, so Tuesday night becomes a boys’ junior varsity/boys’ varsity event instead.

Hey, at least we’re in the gym finally – I’ll take it.

Upcoming is Friday night’s plan on going to Allen County/Scottsville for a varsity double header against the Patriots, then hopefully with Mother Nature’s cooperation, we can be back on track with what the schedule actually says will happen.

Still, with the early All “A” exit last week, and the loss of a snow game or two, there is the possibility that either team could still find a way to add a game to two.

Stay tuned.

So long to Bob

For many, many years, you readers have read this space for local sports happenings, updates and (sometimes off-center) opinions. At the same time, we have provided syndicated sports writer Bob Watkins and his Sports in Kentucky column to give you weekly insights into college and high school and even pro programs that we just didn’t have easy access to.

Bob, who was a former newspaper sportswriter before deciding to become a syndicated columnist, sent word out last week that he’s planning on retiring soon, thus ending his weekly insight into the world of sports in this Commonwealth.

“No health problems. No mental ones either, that I can tell. It’s just time,” Bob wrote in his email to us publishers who carry his column.

Bob says he will continue until the end of March.
