Turnovers … by Alan B. Gibson

Winding it down, believe it or not

While we can all hope that the old groundhog’s prediction for an early spring will come true, at the same time, it’s hard to believe that we’ve already reached the February page of the calendar and we’re already less than three weeks away from seeing this 2015-16 regular season basketball campaign come to an end.

February brings longer days, a hope for warmer weather on occasion and thoughts that begin turning to the post-season tournament stretch for our Lady Dawgs and Bulldogs.

Before we go there, however, let’s finish out the current regular season handful of games that are left and make note of a few other events and developments that need mentioning.

Schedule change: A change in the upcoming list of games is a time only adjustment that will happen this Saturday when our Lady Dawgs play host to Pulaski County in the Lindle Castle Gymnasium. An earlier tip-off for the JV will see action get underway at 2:00 p.m.

No game Thursday: CCHS Athletic Director Mike Beard tells me that some schedules indicated games would be held this Thursday for our 9th and JV Lady Bulldogs. Apparently those games never actually materialized so if your were planning on a trip Thursday to Bowling Green, well go ahead, but don’t plan on watching any basketball.

Booster/WANY Radio auction planning underway

Of course the end of regular season games and the start of tournament play also means it’s soon time for the annual Basketball Booster Club / WANY Radio Auction, which has turned into a major event for everyone involved, nearly reaching party state during the broadcast.

This year’s radio auction is again set for the Friday following the final regular season game, which this year will fall on February 19. Program hours are set to be 5:00 – 10:00 p.m.

A Lady Bulldog is back in the winner’s circle

Murray High School captured the 2016 All “A” Classic girls championship last Sunday, defeating Owensboro Catholic 45-28 to claim the school’s first title in that event.

Although it was the first time the Murray Lady Tigers had won the All”A” championship, it wasn’t the first time for everyone involved to be standing in that winner’s circle.

Long-time Lady Bulldog standout and Wall of Famer Amber Guffey is currently an assistant coach with the Lady Tigers and she was, of course, a part of our dominating years when Clinton County won back to back All “A” Classic championship titles in 2003 and 2004.

The Murray Lady Tigers are also real contenders this season for the KHSAA Sweet 16 title, hitting this week’s Dave Cantrall rankings as the Number three rated team in the state and now boast a 24-1 record.

Congrats Amber!

I’ll see you in the gym
