It’s tax time again, and with the already sometimes burdensome task of preparing documents needed to complete tax returns, other more scrupulous people are waiting to try and take your money even before you file your return.

The Clinton County Sheriff’s Department, in a press release issued last Thursday, February 11, is again warning the residents of Clinton County about yet another IRS scam.

According to the release, the department had received numerous calls last week about this incident.

The IRS is warning the public about the phone scam that targets people across the nation. Callers claiming to be from the IRS tell intended victims they owe taxes and must pay using pre-paid debit card or wire transfer. The scammers threaten those who refuse to pay with arrest, deportation or loss of a business or driver’s license.

The IRS usually first contacts people by mail–not by phone–about unpaid taxes. And, no one should ever give out personal information over the telephone to anyone.
