A new event that the Relay committee is developing is encouraging pastors and churches in the community to participate in what is being billed as “Purple in the Pulpit.” Pastors and congregations are asked to wear purple on the Sunday (April 17) preceding the Relay event the following Friday.

There have also been over $3,000 collected in sponsorships this year, exceeding expectations. Sponsorships include: Albany Full Service, $100; State Farm, $250; Farm Bureau, $250; Surgical Specialties, $250; People’s Bank, $250; Dyer Drug, 250; Monticello Banking, $250; First and Farmer’s Bank, $250; Davis Insurance Group, $500; Shearer Drug, $500; Roberts’ Pharmacy, $500.

Also in honor of this year’s Relay For Life teams, the committee is asking each student in the school system to help out by participating in Spirit Week Monday through Friday, April 18-22. Everyone is asked to bring a quarter each day and wear the theme for that day. Their quarters will go to their school’s Relay team and help support a very worthy cause. Each school is selling “In Memory” or “In Honor Of” chain links for a quarter. On the night of the Relay, each school team will have a contest to see which school has the longest chain.

Team members and interested citizens are also invited to bring with them the evening of the Relay an item for the silent auction, or a cake or snack for the survivor meal.

This year will see a western theme and the entire community is invited to come out the CCHS anytime from 4 to 10 p.m. on Friday, April 22 to join the fun and at the same time, join the fight to find a cure for cancer.
