For the first time in the past three years, Clinton Countians had a chance to participate in Tire Amnesty Days and the Dale Hollow Lake Road Cleanup both held late last week and weekend. Both were very successful, according to Penny Jo Stearns, administrative assistance in the county judge/executive’s office.
During Tire Amnesty Days, which was held Thursday through Saturday, April 14-16, locally, some 30,000 tires for disposal were dropped off at the State Highway Maintenance Garage. The program, which is offered to counties in three-year cycles, allows residents to get rid of old unused tires and also tires collected by the county along roadways and dump site areas are disposed of during this time.
The Dale Hollow Lake Road Cleanup, was held over a two-hour period this past Saturday morning, April 16.
According to figures compiled, a total of 45 volunteers, including some county workers, helped clean up some 30 miles of roadways running to the lake. Not only were 240 bags of trash collected, but several other larger items ranging from bicycles to laptops to vacuum cleaners, among other items, were picked up and disposed of.
Stearns said she would like to thank Solid Waste Coordinator Rick Stearns and County Road Foreman Michael Craig for organizing the events, and Robert Roeper and the Albany Volunteer Fire Department for escorting in the areas where volunteers picked up litter along the roadways during the Dale Hollow Lake Cleanup.
Stearns also noted that Tammie Wilson, PRIDE Coordinator for the almost 45 counties in southern and eastern Kentucky that are part of the program, was very helpful in each county organizing the Dale Hollow Cleanup.
Following the road cleanup, a cookout was held at Dale Hollow Lake State Resort Park and several door prizes were awarded to the volunteers.
Stearns also thanked the following sponsors:
* Monetary: First and Farmers Bank; People’s Bank of Clinton County; and County Clerk Sheila Booher.
* Food: Cowboy Charcoal, Pepsi Bottling Company; Equity Group; IGA; and Save-A-Lot.
* Door prizes: Gaddie Shamrock; Subway of Albany; Horseshoe Grill; Junction Station; Dairy Queen of Albany; Pizza Hut of Albany; Hunter’s BBQ; and Shearer Lawn Service.
Stearns said she wanted to thank all the aforementioned, as well as all the volunteers who helped clean up the roadways and to those who took advantage of the tire amnesty days. She also reminds local residents it’s not too late to help clean up roadways and tourist areas in the county, as April PRIDE Cleanup month is still underway throughout the month.
