Baseball, softball headed toward post-season

Hard to believe, but yet another round of spring sports seasons are headed toward the end of regular season play and our Racket Dawgs have already ended post season, while baseball and softball are slated to end regular season play this week and head into district tournament action next week.

Last week’s Sports mentioned that our Racket Dawgs made it to the championship round of the regional tennis tournament, but the championship round was being played too late for last week’s NEWS deadline.

The Racket Dawgs fell in defeat in the regional championship game, but still came the closest the squad has ever come to advancing to the state tennis championships.

A runner-up photo can be seen this week in Sports, but here is a well deserved “Congratulations” to the Racket Dawgs and first-year coach Mickey McFall.

Noting that our Racket Dawg squads were without a single senior playing this year bodes well for our outlook on the courts next year.

Again, congrats.

Metcalfe County will host this year’s softball and baseball tournaments next week, and both the Lady Bat Dawgs and Bat Dawgs will be headed to Edmonton with hopes of advancing on to regional play in Bowling Green next week.

Nyquist favored to take Saturday’s Preakness

While the field isn’t set for Saturday’s running of the Preakness at the time of this writing Tuesday morning, the Kentucky Derby champion Nyquist is the early favorite to pick up the second leg of the Triple Crown.

Early odds have Nyquist as the favorite at 5-7, with Exaggerator a close second favorite at 9-2.

Things get crowded after those two and, of course, the odds can and will certainly change as we get closer to post time, and as has happened in the past, the lineup can also change right up to the time the Preakness field has been set, which occurs on Wednesday.

Unlike the Derby’s large lineup of thoroughbreds, the Preakness is a much smaller field of contenders, limited to only 14 horses for the 1 3/16 mile long race.

My small bets are going with the favorites – Nyquist and Exaggerator and again I’m going to stick with Suddenbreakingnews to finishing in the money, in that order.

Don’t break the bank, but if you’re looking for advice at the betting window, there it is.
