Residents, officials want traffic lights at dangerous intersection

A local resident is leading the way in an effort that she and several others are hoping will eventually make the county’s most hazardous highway intersection safer for motorists, resulting the fewer injuries and less loss of lives from automobile accidents.

Doris Farley, who lives on the Hwy. 734, also known as the Grider Hill Dock Road, has been working with other residents from that area as well as across Clinton County, in an effort to see the Kentucky Department of Transportation look into installing traffic lights at the intersection of U.S. 127 and Ky. 90 and Hwy. 734.

The intersection is near the location of Junction Station service station and Restaurant and is likely the busiest intersection in Clinton County and for several years, has been the scene of many serious automobile accidents that has sent emergency crews to the location over and over again.

In recent weeks, two new businesses have opened in the immediate area, producing even more traffic congestion in the area, which concerns Farley even more.

“The addition of a Dollar General close to the intersection has caused even more traffic,” Farley said this week to the Clinton County News during a telephone conversation and later an exchange of emails Monday morning.

In addition to the Dollar General Store opening recently near the intersection, another retail outlet, Stuff Plain and Fancy, has also opened a new retail location in the building directly across the road in the former Albany Ford facility.

“We would like to urge anyone who shares our concern about the safety of people who use this intersection to call the Department of Transportation and add your voice urging the state department to install a stop light at the intersection,” Farley said.

Last summer, she created a site where a petition can be viewed and signed.

That petition, already signed by about 200 people, can be viewed and signed at the following site:

More recently, Clinton County Judge/Executive Richard Armstrong and the Clinton County Fiscal Court also addressed the matter.

Judge/Executive Armstrong and the Clinton Fiscal Court is asking concerned citizens to help in the quest of getting something done from the state Department of Highways to decrease the dangers at the intersection of U.S. 127 and Hwy. 90 west, in particular, the section at Junction Station that leads to Grider Hill Dock.

That particular intersection is not only one of the busiest intersections along the bypass that connects to Hwy. 90, but in recent months, also one of the most dangerous, as several serious accidents have occurred at that particular location.

The request from county officials urging concerned residents to contact highway department officials comes just following another near-fatal accident that occurred there late last Friday afternoon. A local man was seriously injured in a two-vehicle collision that occurred there.

Judge Armstrong noted early this week that the county has made requests to the highway department for help in getting additional traffic safety devices installed at that location and that some residents have even sent a petition to the local District 8 office in Somerset, but thus far to no avail.

County officials urged residents concerned about the traffic safety issues surrounding the intersection to contact the Kentucky Department of Highways District 8 office, voice their concerns and urge them to take steps to make the intersection area safer for the traveling public.
