Turnovers … by Alan B. Gibson

Just a little more down time during the dog days

School will get back in session in just a few weeks, believe it or not, and with it, the start of a whole new set of fall sports (they should call a couple of them summer sports).

The lineup of fall sports is our strangest as far as start and ending times with none of them lining up at all.

Golf, soccer, volleyball, football and finally cross country will be our next coverage events, and already some of the athletes are beginning preparing for the upcoming seasons.

Golfers in particular, being the first with matches and early tournaments, are usually the first to get things underway, and of course they have the ability to keep their game sharp on their own before organized practices are being held.

Of course as we get into the end of July and August, the heat becomes a factor and coaches have to also monitor temperatures and humidity levels before determining whether or not these young athletes can practice outdoors on any particular day or not. Oftentimes, practices, and later games and matches, can be halted in midstream if heat index levels exceed the allowable limits.

Long gone are the days of bringing plenty of water and taking a handful of salt pills (I never really liked those things anyway).

Play a little golf, and help the boys of summer too

A separate ad appears this week (and last week) with details surrounding golf scramble that will benefit the Clinton County High School Bat Dawgs.

The tourney, a four-man blind draw ABCD event is slated for Saturday, July 23. Things will get underway with a 10:00 a.m. shotgun start and several extras will be available but the basic entry fee is $50.

A full field will see a first prize of $1,000 being awarded to the winning team.
