2016-2017 school year just ahead, sports seasons likewise

Hard to believe, especially as we enjoy this 100 plus degree heat outside (that’s not tongue in cheek if you know how much I really, really hate winter) that the start of the 2016-2017 school year is just barely over a week away, with students reporting to classes for the first time Monday, August 8.

With that, the start of the 2016-17 sports seasons are also upon us and among the first will be golf and soccer and both have already begun practice and matches won’t be far behind.

In fact, the Lady Golf Dawgs are playing in a tournament at Green County this weekend and both squads will open the regular season with a three-way match against Cumberland County and York Institute next Monday, August 2 at Dale Hollow Lake State Resort Park.

A front page article this week will give our readers a closer look at some of the practices and precautions coaches have to take during these hot conditions while trying to get practice sessions in and make sure the student-athlete’s well being and safety is protected.

With all of that said, there are a couple of upcoming dates involving events around fall sports that I need to pass along. Any coaches or booster members with news about other fall related sports events, bring them in and I’ll spread the word about those as well.

Little League football sign-ups end this Saturday

Trisha Miller, our Bulldog First Wife of Football, wants to remind parents that Football Little League player and cheerleader sign-ups will have one last date this Saturday for young players to get in on the fun.

Sign-up for players, grades 1-6, and for cheerleaders, grades K-6, will be held this Saturday at Sonic in Albany from 9:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon.

The cost will be $35 for each player or cheerleader for the season, and players must obtain a sports physical prior to the first practice session.

She also would like to add that Little League coaches for both football and cheerleading are badly needed and anyone interested in helping to continue in helping our gridiron feeder program can contact her at 931-854-7584.

Golf team benefit tournament is August 13

Local golfers can help our Lady Golf Dawgs and Golf Dawgs by playing in the 4th Annual Mike Anders Fore The Kids Golf Tournament.

The tournament will be played Saturday, August 13, at 76 Falls Country Club and will be a blind draw A-B-C-D four-person scramble.

A host of tournament prizes for various contests will be held, and based on a full field, the first place team could win $2,000.

A hole-in-one could win you a Sea-Doo from Denney Marine.

The event gets underway with a 9:00 a.m. check-in followed by a 10:00 a.m. shotgun start. Entry Fee is $50 per player.

To pre-register or learn additional information, contact Greg Claborn at 606-688-2673 or Fredrick Honeycutt at 606-688-1965.

Of course the tournament is named in memory of the late Mike Anders, the popular CCHS Golf Coach who perished in an airplane crash a few years ago. It’s a fitting tribute to Mike, who was a really good guy and was intense in his efforts to help his students in any way he could.
