Albany golfer Caleb McQuitty was one of three boys who qualified from the 10-11 year old division of the Drive, Chip and Putt Competition.

He will advance to the sub-regional level next with a competition at Louisville’s Persommon Ridge Golf Course on August 27, and is hoping to achieve the ultimate goal of reaching the National finals of the competition which is held at Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia in April, 2017.

The regional level of the event was held last week, July 18, at Gibson Bay Golf Course in Richmond, Kentucky.

Caleb, a sixth grader, the son of Joel and Paula McQuitty of Albany, finished the competition with a second overall ranking in the 10-11 year-old boys’ division after a first place in chipping and a third place in putting.

Though his family says that Caleb began playing golf at six months old, when he began crawling around the living room hitting balls with a club, Caleb says that he first really played golf at age eight when for the first time he hit a hard ball with a lofted club at “Sunflower Hill”, the golf course Caleb and his brothers made on the McQuitty family farm in Albany.

Caleb has enjoyed playing golf with his brothers at 76 Falls and was thrilled recently, when participating in the Monday Night Scramble for the first time, to be on the winning team with Steve Stearns, Larry Ferguson, Barry Gibson, and Mike Riddle who kindly called Caleb their “MVP”.
