John E. “Honest John” Shelton, 87, Sheltontown Road, Albany, passed away Wednesday, July 20, 2016 at The Medical Center-Albany.

He was a retired farmer and a Veteran of the Korean Conflict, having served on the front lines of the Heavy Mortar Company, 31st Infantry Regiment, 1951 and 1952.

He was the son of the late Roscoe and Delie Sheffield Shelton. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Charles and Dallas Shelton and a sister, Dorothy Drumright.

He is survived by two sisters, Evelyn (Tilmon) Guffey and Judy (John) Schmenk; two sisters-in-law, Leta Kay Shelton and Gertie Shelton. Also surviving are one special nephew, Johnny (Judy) Schmenk; four nieces, Patricia (Jay) Hicks, Melinda (Ray) Wiggins, Melissa Cross, and Janet (Ed) Turner; and several great nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Saturday, July 23, 2016 at 11 a.m. at Weldon Haddix Funeral Home with Bro. Roger Jones and Bro. Ted Burchett officiating. Final resting place in Shelton Cemetery with Military Honors. Arrangements were made through Weldon Haddix Funeral Home of Albany. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations to the Shelton Cemetery Fund.
