Golf season off and running, more action just ahead

As I mentioned last week, with the start of school next week comes the new 2016-17 athletic season and our golf teams are the first up, already getting the season off and running.

Although we are still working on our annual Fall Sports Preview here at the Clinton County News, the Golf Dawgs and Lady Golf Dawgs are already in full swing (pun intended).

Weather permitting, our C.C.H.S. teams were to host York Institute Tuesday afternoon in a three-way match that also included Cumberland County.

Even before the start of the regular season action this week, our Lady Golf Dawgs hit the road this past weekend to participate in the Green County High School Invitational at Green County Country Club.

Golf Coach Nic Irwin says the Lady Golf Dawgs finished the tourney in the top half, placing fifth out of 12 teams in the field. Not a bad start at all.

Football action just down the road.

As I mentioned above, we are still working on the Fall Sports Preview, but just a heads up also that Bulldog gridiron action is just ahead as well, with the Dawgs taking the field for the first time on August 19, when they travel just down the road and across the state line to take on the Bobcats of Pickett County, Tennessee.

Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m.

Clinton County will appear in its first home game the following week, August 26, hosting Trimble County.

Golf team benefit tournament is August 13

Just another reminder that local golfers can help our Lady Golf Dawgs and Golf Dawgs by playing in the 4th Annual Mike Anders Fore The Kids Golf Tournament.

The tournament will be played Saturday, August 13, at 76 Falls Country Club and will be a blind draw A-B-C-D four-person scramble.

A host of tournament prizes for various contests will be held, and based on a full field, the first place team could win $2,000.

A hole-in-one could win you a Sea-Doo from Denney Marine.

The event gets underway with a 9:00 a.m. check-in followed by a 10:00 a.m. shotgun start. Entry Fee is $50 per player.

To pre-register or learn additional information, contact Greg Claborn at 606-688-2673 or Fredrick Honeycutt at 606-688-1965.

Of course the tournament is named in memory of the late Mike Anders, the popular CCHS Golf Coach who perished in an airplane crash a few years ago. It’s a fitting tribute to Mike, who was a really good guy and was intense in his efforts to help his students in any way he could.
