Candidate filing slows

The filing of candidates for some non-partisan races that will appear on the November general election ballot in Albany and Clinton County almost came to a halt over the past week–save one candidate filing for office over the past week.

According to petitions filed with the Clinton County Clerk, the only person who filed since the previous week was Crystal Irwin, who has filed for school board in District Four, the North, East and West Albany precincts.

Irwin, the incumbent, was appointed earlier this year to the seat vacated by two-term member Junior Cecil, who resigned late last year to take a position with the Cooperative Extension Service as 4-H Agent.

As of Monday morning, August 1, only eight candidates–two of which are seeking a seat on the Clinton County Soil Conservation District–had filed.

All six seats on the Albany City Council are up for election this year, but thus far, only two people–both incumbents, have entered the race.

Three of the five school board districts will have races this year, Districts Two, Three and Four. No one had filed for the District Two seat in the Seventy-Six and Cave Springs precincts; only one person, the incumbent, had filed in District Three, which takes in Highway, Illwill and Speck, but three persons, including the incumbent, have now filed in the District Four race.

Two persons have filed for seats on the Soil Conservation District with additional seats to be filled.

The filing deadline is next Tuesday, August 9 at 4 p.m. A listing of candidates who file through Friday of this week will be listed in next week’s Clinton County News.
