Soccer team gets big win

The Clinton County High School boys’ soccer team picked up a big win Monday night in a match at Tompkinsville, scoring a 4-0 victory over the Falcons of Monroe County.

The win marked the first ever district win for the Dawgs.

Congrats are certainly in order to all players and coaches for reaching this milestone in the still young program.

Golf teams earn more wins

Both our Lady Golf Dawgs and Golf Dawgs are off to a nice start this season and both picked up wins in an appearance at our local 76 Falls Country Club last week.

Taking on York Institute, the Lady Golf Dawgs picked up a win with a three-player score of 134 to York’s 182, while the Golf Dawgs earned two wins in a three-way match against York and Cumberland with scores of 157, 172 and 199, respectively.

Reed Sloan and Macy Campbell led all golfers in those matches, each finishing with a score of 38.

Fore the Kids a huge success

The business and golfing community came together once again last weekend in grand style to support our Lady Golf Dawgs and Golf Dawgs as well as to honor the memory of former golf coach Mike Anders.

The annual golf team fundraiser – Fore the Kids – was likely the most successful fundraising event yet.

Several photos provided by Golf team booster Melissa Campbell can be found elsewhere this week in Sports.

Meet the Bulldogs was Monday, Dawgs take on Pickett Friday

A scheduling hiccup prevented much pre-event publicity, but the annual Meet The Bulldogs was held this past Monday night at Bulldog Field, in preparation of this Friday night’s season kick-off at Pickett County.

Our Dawgs will travel just a few miles south to take on the Bobcats of Pickett County this Friday night, with a 7:00 p.m. kickoff.

Our first home contest is the following Friday, when the Bulldogs host Trimble County on Bulldog Field, again with a 7:00 p.m. kickoff.

Coach Miller and staff have been working hard getting ready for this 2016 campaign and it should be a good year.

Scattered rains are in the forecast for Friday but all in all, it should be a great night for high school football.

New Sheriff in town

I noted a couple of weeks ago that long-time CCHS Athletic Director Mike Beard had stepped down and the search was on for his replacement.

Another familiar face to the Bulldog athletic program has been tagged to take the reins of what is likely the most important job for the all around well-being of the athletic program.

Nick Irwin has been named as the new Athletic Director at CCHS and he has hit the ground running, mostly because he had too. By the time he was named to the position, school had started and more than one season was already underway and a host of others, including football, was just days from kicking off.

Nick has been close to the CCHS Athletic Department for several years, playing for the Bulldogs both on the basketball floor as well as on the baseball diamond during his high school career a couple of decades ago, graduating in 1998.

Currently, Nick can be found mostly on the golf course, coaching both the Lady Golf Dawgs and the Golf Dawgs in this 2016 season and for the past several years, he has been an assistant coach on the bench for the boys’ basketball program, also serving as J.V. and Freshman boys coach.

“I’m just looking forward to the challenge and hope that I can fill a portion of the void left by Mike Beard, because no one can reach the bar he set for this position,” Irwin told me Tuesday morning about his new duties.

Already close to the program and our coaching staffs, Nick should be just fine with his new title.

I’ve already put in my order for a personal hotdog cooker at the Official Table during basketball season, but as of yet, I haven’t heard an answer from Nick. Looks like he caught on pretty quick.

Good luck, Nick.
