The man accused of murdering the son of Albany Police Chief Ernest Guffey had his first day in court last Tuesday, September 13, one day after the incident that landed him in jail on the charge.

Travis S. Slone, 27, appeared in Clinton District Court before District Judge Mike Lawson and entered a not guilty plea on the charge.

The murder charge is the only one levied against the defendant at this time, according to court records.

Judge Lawson also appointed Public Defender Brad Shuffett to represent Slone during the proceeding and set bond at $1 million cash only.

Slone, who was initially lodged in the Clinton County Jail, was moved to the Russell County Jail last week where he remains incarcerated as of press time.

Slone was charged with murder last Monday evening, September 12, about four and a half-hours after allegedly shooting and killing James D. Guffey, 53, of Albany in an incident that took place at approximately 2 p.m. that afternoon.

The incident occurred at the Agnal Slone residence on Hwy. 738, the Wolf River Dock Road, in the Albany City Limits.

According to Kentucky State Police reports, Slone, of Albany, shot Guffey following an altercation that had taken place. Guffey was transported to The Medical Center-Albany where he was pronounced dead.

According to KSP reports, Slone was detained at the scene and officially charged with murder shortly before 6:30 p.m. that evening.

A preliminary hearing for Slone has been scheduled for next Wednesday, September 28 in Clinton District Court.
