Beginning in October, a group of nineteen seniors in Angela Sloan’s dual credit English class will be working in the community on their senior projects.

With these projects, seniors find a need in the community and then develop and enact a plan to meet that need.

These service-learning projects will span a six month period from October 2016-March 2017.

In April, students will present the impact of their projects to a panel of community members.

Each student’s project is five-pronged: a proposal assessing a need in the community with a specific action plan, the actual time spent “working” the project, a research paper on one central aspect of the project, a portfolio of student work, and, finally, a presentation before a panel of community members.

Service-learning projects are used throughout the world as ways to offer real-world learning experiences in conjunction with academic standards.

While addressing standards in reading, writing, and speaking, students are also learning how to work with community members to solve real problems. These projects help blend skills in research, public speaking, public service, and so much more.

Throughout the coming months, you will see these students “working” their projects in different areas of the community—nursing home, library, schools, etc. Many of them will also be asking community members for assistance with some of their projects.

In addition, Clinton County News will be spotlighting a different student and his/her projects each week in the coming months. Please help support these students as they work to improve our community.
