A Clinton County woman has died from injuries she sustained in an automobile accident last Wednesday morning.

Evangeline Brown, 83, of Allen Street in Albany, died shortly after a two-vehicle accident at the intersection of U.S. 127 Albany Bypass and Hwy. 738, also known as the Wolf River Dock Road.

According to a report filed by the Clinton County Sheriff’s Department, Brown was driving a 2012 Ford Fusion east on Hwy. 738 toward Albany, when she proceeded across U.S. 127 Bypass and into the path of a tractor trailer truck.

The 2002 Peterbilt truck was being driven at the time of the accident by Bryant C. Smith, 47, of Byrdstown, Tennessee, and was headed north on U.S. 127.

According to the report, Brown stated that she had not seen the tractor-trailer approaching her after she had stopped at the intersection stop sign and began to proceed through the intersection.

The truck impacted the passenger side of Brown’s vehicle and both vehicles came to rest in the northbound lane of U.S. 127 with the truck being partially in the roadway ditch and right-of-way.

According to the accident report, Smith stated that he attempted to avoid the impact but was unable to steer and brake away from the vehicle being operated by Brown.

Brown was transported to the Medical Center of Albany by the Clinton County Emergency Medical Services and was later airlifted en route to the University of Kentucky Medical Center by Air Evac.

During the flight, Brown developed complications from her injuries, forcing Air Evac to land at the Russell County Hospital, where she later died, according to the accident report.

The intersection is one of many in the area that has been the scene of serious automobile accidents in recent months.

Clinton County Sheriff Jim Guffey told the Clinton County News that he had been working with Clinton County Judge/Executive Richard Armstrong deuring the past several months to collect statistics and accident data involving this intersection as well as others that have been the scene of serious accidents.

Although they have met with state transportation officials on the matter and have requested the installation of additional caution lights and traffic signals (stop lights), they have so far only been met with resistance from the state and have been unsuccessful in those efforts.

A complete death notice for Evangeline Brown appears this week on page X.
