Indian Creek reunion held last month

The annual Indian Creek Reunion was held Saturday, September 3, 2016, at Kendall Park, below the Wolf Creek Dam on the banks of the Cumberland River. The weather was perfect with warm, brilliant sunshine. The reunion is for all people who lived on Indian Creek in Clinton and Russell counties, their families, descendants and friends. This year’s reunion saw the largest number of attendees in recent years being some 85 people.

Ina Conner Snow, 94, of Campbellsville, daughter of the late Willie and Laura Conner, was again honored as the oldest person present. Ozena Conner Matney, daughter of Willie and Laura Conner, was a very close second in the oldest person present category with Mary McWhorter being the third oldest. Maverick Ray, 15 months, grandson of Ozena, was the youngest person present. Jessica Hope (Conner) Cosby, descendant of Willie and Laura Conner, was recognized for traveling the greatest distance to attend the reunion, having travelled 450 miles from Mercer, Pennsylvania.

The descendants of Willie and Laura Conner, residents of Indian Creek, held their family reunion in conjunction with the Indian Creek reunion. With some 45 descendants and spouses present, covering four generations, the Willie Conner family provided music, a cake walk, singing and wonderful fellowship. They plan to return next year.

Other families of Indian Creek are likewise encouraged and invited to have their family reunions or gatherings at the Indian Creek reunion. The added people make the reunion more enjoyable, interesting and memorable.

The late Billy Jack Conner was recognized for his many years of scheduling and assisting with the reunion. The late J. B. Burchett and Iva Lee Dickerson Summers were recognized as the organizers of the reunion over 35 years ago. Gene Conner later succeeded Burchett as the supervisor and has been present and has overseen every reunion since.

The reunion is held at the picnic shelter below Wolf Creek Dam on the first Saturday following Labor Day. However, because of a scheduling conflict, this year the reunion was held on the Saturday of Labor Day Weekend. The 2017 reunion will be held on Saturday, September 2, 2017, beginning at 10:00 a.m. rather than the next Saturday again because of a scheduling conflict. You are encouraged to save that date, and come and bring family and friends. Dinner is served at noon. Each family is requested to bring a covered dish.

Also, please bring photographs, letters, documents, maps, family histories, artifacts and any other materials concerning life and times on Indian Creek. A book about the people who lived on Indian Creek along with photographs of people, houses, school buildings, school photos, churches and scenes of Indian Creek is being compiled for a permanent record.
