CCHS student opens clothes closet at Clear Fork Church as community service project

Students in Angela Sloan’s Dual Credit English class at Clinton County High School have developed service-learning projects to help benefit the community in some way. These projects have multiple layers from writing the initial proposal, working their project, creating a portfolio, writing a research paper, and presenting results to a panel of community leaders.

One of the seniors in the class is Jared Upchurch. Jared’s service-learning project is called Jared’s Community Closet. With the help of his church, Clear Fork Baptist, Jared is setting up a clothes closet once a month for anyone in need of seasonal clothing.

When asked what prompted him to develop this project, he commented on how many times he had seen young people without the proper clothing or shoes for the season. When given the assignment to think of something he could do to help his community, he said this was what automatically came to mind.

Since each student is required to have a mentor to monitor his project, Jared asked Adam Davidson, a deacon at Clear Fork who worked with AmeriCorps for two years. Davidson has worked with Jared to help his project get organized and off the ground.

On Saturday, October 29th, Jared’s Community Closet opened at Clear Fork Church. “I am hoping to get the word out to anyone who may be in need of seasonal clothing—especially with winter on the way—to come to the closet and get what they need,” stated Upchurch.

The closet will be open one Saturday each month from 8 -12. To find out which Saturday the closet will be open, please follow Jared’s Community Closet on Facebook or watch for announcements on the local cable channel and/or radio station.

If you would like to make a donation to the closet or know of anyone who might benefit from the services it provides, please call or text 606-688-0321.

Each a week a different student and his/her project will be spotlighted in the Clinton County News.
