Turnovers … by Alan B. Gibson

Here we go

With a handful of pre-season scrimmages behind us now, and as we think about sitting down with family and friends for Thanksgiving gatherings and meals, a look at the calendar tells us that it’s time for high school roundball – finally.

Next week, local basketball fans can make their way to the Lindle Castle Gymnasium for the season kick-off when our Lady Bulldogs and Bulldogs play host to Casey County. Tip-off for the girls’ game is a little earlier than the norm, so make sure you note that the opening game gets underway at 5:30 p.m.

With the start of the 2016-17 season, we at the Clinton County News are once again proud to present to our reachers and fans the annual pre-season preview of the players, cheerleaders and coaches we will be watching for the next four months or so

The Big Blue Preview is included in this week’s issue. Sit down with it and get to know the Lady Dawgs and Bulldogs this week while you are trying to digest that plate full of pie.

As always, we’re proud of the finished product in this Big Blue Preview after several weeks of interviews, writing, photo appointments and processing and advertising sales and composition.

Credit for most of the work in this edition goes to Brett Gibson and Amanda Sharpe for a job well done.

Thank goodness – it’s finally time to throw up the rock! I think this past election brouhaha made the off season wait worse than normal.

Couple of scheduling notes

Some years they go together smooth, some years not so much. This was the latter.

Fans will find as many as three different versions of the 2016-17 basketball schedule out there, as revisions, mistakes and miscommunications were aplenty during this pre-season.

Long story short, the first clarification is that fans should make sure they are planning on coming out to the Castle on December 6 as we play host to Monroe County in a GV-BV double header. Some schedules had the game in Tompkinsville. Not.

There are a couple of other discrepancies and I will remind fans as the year progresses, but the game on February 14 against Somerset is also a Home game for Clinton County fans.

Remembering Robbie

I was honored to host a brief presentation Monday night at Clinton County Middle School where well-known sports icon Robbie Davis was memorialized.

Robbie passed away this past summer after suffering a heart attack while on Dale Hollow Lake with his family.

Of course Rob was well known here as one of the most recognizable figures related to Clinton County basketball, both as a player during his high school days in the late 70s and early 80s, and later as a coach of a host of players at the middle school level at Clinton County Middle School.

During Monday’s ceremony that was held between middle school basketball games, the floor at Clinton County Middle School was named in his honor – Robbie Davis Court. A decal placed on the court will remind fans of his dedication to helping young players advance their skills.

It was pointed out by his brother, Mike, during Monday’s ceremony that naming a basketball court after him would have certainly pleased Rob more than anything. It was a fitting gesture and I was certainly proud to have played a part in the ceremony.

I’ll see you in the gym!
