Dawgs get OT win over Monroe, fall to Greenwood

The Clinton County Bulldogs had a very good week with two wins, one in overtime, but fell to the hands of Greenwood on Saturday, 70-48.

On Tuesday night, Clinton County took on Monroe County in a game that saw both teams tied at the end of regulation. Clinton County prevailed in overtime with the 65-64 win. On Friday night of last week, Clinton County hosted Metcalfe County and easily won, 73-29.

Saturday’s game was a let down for the Dawgs as Greenwood held Clinton County to under 50 points for the game.

During the first quarter, Clinton County fell behind early as Greenwood took a 15-11 lead over the Dawgs after the first period.

In the second period, Clinton County outscored the Gators, 15-12 to only trail by one at the half, 27-26.

In the third quarter, both teams put up big numbers in the eight minute period, but it was Greenwood putting up 27 points to Clinton County’s 18 that gave the Gators the edge in the game, 53-44.

The final quarter saw Clinton County only post four total points while Greenwood extended its lead with 17 fourth quarter points. That sealed the deal for the Gators as Greenwood came out with a win, 70-48.

Clinton County’s first district game of the year was a big win for the Bulldogs as they demolished the Hornets, 73-29.

Scoring was plentiful for the Dawgs as Clinton County put up 22 first quarter points compared to Metcalfe County’s four.

During the second quarter, Head Coach Todd Messer was able to use more of his bench players in order to get them varsity experience.

Chase Guffey came off the bench and gave Clinton County a boost with 10 first half points, including two three pointers, a field goal and two free throws.

Caleb Guffey also came off the bench adding two buckets in the first half.

The Bulldogs held Metcalfe County to only 11 first half points while putting up 46 of its own by halftime.

Metcalfe County did outscore the Dawgs in the third quarter, 13-6, but the commanding lead Clinton County obtained in the first half was more than enough to coast in the second half.

During the fourth quarter, Clinton County added 21 points to its side of the board while Metcalfe County only scored five for the period to give Clinton County the win, 73-29.

Overtime

The Bulldogs had a hard fought game Tuesday night at The Castle as Monroe County came into town.

The Bulldogs prevailed in the overtime win, 65-64.

It wasn’t all smiles in the first quarter for the Bulldogs as Monroe County clearly had control of the game.

Brett Gibson hit a three pointer to open the game and give the Dawgs its first lead of the game.

From there on out in the first quarter it was all Monroe County as the Falcons put together a 19-4 run to close out the first period, 19-7.

The Falcons continued the run in the second quarter with a quick basket and a 22-7 lead. Jackson Harlan hit a field goal to close the gap, 27-9, followed by a basket from Seth Stockton and Jamison Summers to cut the lead to nine points, 22-13.

Monroe County hit a free throw to push the lead back to 10, but a three pointer by Gibson cut the lead to seven with 3:42 on the clock, 23-16.

Monroe County then put together a 7-0 run to push the lead back to 14, 30-16.

Clinton County’s flat shooting only led to six more points before halftime, 32-22.

The third quarter saw both teams battling hard as Monroe and Clinton started to move the ball better on offense.

Clinton County outscored Monroe County in the third quarter, 13-12, which put Monroe up by 11 after the third quarter ended.

The fourth quarter is when Clinton County really turned on and started chiping away at Monroe’s lead.

At the 6:30 mark, Clinton County trailed by 12 points, 51-39. During the next four minutes, the Dawgs put together a run that would bring the boys’ in blue back in the game and give them a shot at the win.

Clinton County put together a 12-2 run to put the Dawgs within two points of Monroe County with 2:30 on the clock.

At the 1:40 mark, Monroe County drove the lane and scored for a four point edge, 55-51.

Gibson knocked down a field goal with 1:19 remaining to cut the lead to two points, 55-53, but a free throw put Monroe County up by three with 50 seconds on the clock.

Harlan was fouled with 38 seconds to send him to the line where he made two of two to cut Monroe’s lead to one points, 56-55.

Monroe answered with two from the line to extend the lead back to three points, 58-55. On the next possession, Stockton was fouled and hit one of two from the line to cut the lead to two points with 12 seconds on the clock.

With six seconds remaining, Clinton County gained a steal and Gibson was fouled trying to get to the goal. He hit two of two from the line to tie the score at 58 and send the game into overtime.

Clinton County’s momentum carried into the extra period and the Dawgs took control of the game in overtime.

As seconds dwendled, Monroe County had numerous chances to take the lead back, but those shots didn’t fall for the Falcons and the Dawgs narrowly escaped with a one point victory, 65-64.

Clinton County was back in action on Tuesday night against Cumberland, too late for press deadline, and will be at home on Friday night as the Dawgs host Russell County following the Lady Dawgs’ game at 6 p.m.
