Dawgs pick up three wins last week

The Clinton County Bulldogs picked up three wins this week, two of which were district wins and at this point in the schedule, are ranked number one in district play. The Dawgs also won its first game in the Twin Lakes Holiday Classic Monday night by a final score of 78-49.

The Clinton County Bulldogs made quick work of its first game in its annual Twin Lakes Holiday Classic held at The Castle Monday night.

The Dawgs took on York Institute Monday night and right out of the gate, Clinton County took control of the game, jumping out to a 9-2 lead in the first three minutes of the first quarter.

York Institute hit a three pointer at the 4:50 mark, then Clinton County’s Jackson Harlan scored a basket, followed by a three pointer by Brett Gibson for a 14-5 lead.

At the 2:10 mark, York Institute scored a basket, 14-7. Clinton County then held York scoreless for the remainder of the period, while adding four points on two baskets for an 18-7 first quarter score.

During the second quarter, York Institute scored back-to-back baskets after Kyle Choate knocked down a basket at the 7:12 mark.

Gibson hit his third three pointer of the game at the 5:30 mark for a 23-11 lead. York hit a goal to cut the lead to 10 points, but the Dawgs would finish the quarter with a 10-2 run for a 33-15 halftime lead.

York opened the second half with a 7-0 run to cut the Dawgs’ lead to 13 points, but then the Dawgs came out swinging and put together an 11-0 run to pretty much seal the deal on the Dragons, 44-22.

Both teams would finish the quarter strong, but Clinton County’s early lead proved to be the deciding factor. At the end of the third quarter, Clinton County held a commanding lead, 50-32.

In the final quarter, Clinton County posted 28 points in the eight minute period. York only put up 17. The Dawgs took the win by a final score of 78-49.

Friday night saw district rival Russell County come to The Castle for the final game of the night against the Bulldogs.

Russell County started off with a hot hand keeping pace with the Dawgs through the first quarter.

Clinton County had a difficult time in the first quarter finding the rhythm, but by the time the first eight minutes had expired, the Dawgs were tied with the Lakers, 13-13.

Both teams matched each other point for point during the second quarter, but at the 3:15 mark, Jackson Harlan grabbed a bucket, followed by a three pointer by Jamison Summers to give Clinton County a five point lead, 24-19.

The Lakers answered with a field goal, but two straight back-to-back trips to the foul line for Colin Langford gave Clinton County a seven point edge with less than two minutes remaining in the half, 28-21.

Clinton County finished the half with three more points, all coming from the foul line in order to head into the locker room at the half with a six point lead, 31-25.

During the third quarter, the Bulldogs started to click and the baskets started falling more frequently.

Even though Clinton County was dominating on the offensive end, Russell County wasn’t going away so quietly. Both teams battled on both ends of the floor, but at the 2:12 mark, Clinton County reached a 14 point lead, 45-31.

The Lakers finished the quarter with an 8-2 run to cut the Dawgs’ lead to eight points after three quarters, 47-39.

During the fourth quarter, Clinton County’s stamina seemed to be the key in Friday night’s game. The Dawgs really started to pull away in the final eight minutes.

The Dawgs held Russell County to 13 points in the final quarter while putting up 24 of their own.

As the buzzer sounded at the end of regulation, Clinton County pulled off the 71-52 win and to move to 3-0 in district play.

Tuesday night’s game ended up with a win for the Bulldogs, however, in the first quarter Cumberland County kept the score tight for the first eight minutes.

The Dawgs drew first blood with a three pointer by Brett Gibson, but Cumberland County followed suit with a three pointer of its own for a 3-3 score.

Gibson then hit another three pointer, followed by a field goal by Summers for an 8-3 lead.

Although Clinton County never trailed in the first quarter, Cumberland County did tie the score later at 15-15, before Summers hit a basket to end the period, 17-15.

The second quarter is when Clinton County started to pull away, holding the Panthers to only four points in the period. Clinton County posted 17 points for the quarter, for a halftime lead of 34-19.

The second half went much the same for Clinton County as the Bulldogs were able to score at will.

With 1:18 on the clock, Clinton County reached a 21 point lead over the Panthers, 51-30.

Gibson finished the quarter with two foul shots for a 58-34 lead.

During the final eight minutes, Clinton County continued to add points to the board. Cumberland County did outscore Clinton County in the final quarter, 23-19, but the damage had already been done as Clinton County finished with a 20 point victory, 77-57.

Clinton County was back in action this week at The Castle with the Twin Lakes Holiday Classic. The final three games of that tournament will be in next week’s edition of the Clinton County News.

Jamison Summers flew threw the air to stick this layup in during Friday night’s game against Russell County. The Dawgs move to a perfect 3-0 in district play after Friday night’s 71-52 win.

Colin Langford drove the lane and got a shot off against Cumberland County Tuesday night. The Dawgs won the game, 77-57. Langford finished with 20 points.
