Lady Dawgs continue to struggle

The Clinton County Lady Bulldogs’ didn’t fare very well as Clinton County dropped two district games, one to Cumberland County on Tuesday night and one to Russell County on Friday night. The Lady Dawgs also lost the first game in the Lady Raider Holiday Classic against University Heights, 49-28.

The Clinton County Lady Dawgs traveled to Bowling Green, KY this week to take part in the Lady Raider Holiday Classic.

Clinton County’s first game came against University Heights on Monday afternoon. The Lady Dawgs went into the tournament hindered with the absence of Joelie Hicks and Bree Boils due to knee injuries.

During the first quarter, Clinton County posted only four points compared to University Heights’ 13 points.

At the half, Clinton County trailed by nine points, 23-14, and at the end of the third quarter, the Lady Dawgs trailed by 17 points, 37-20.

As the final quarter set in, Clinton County posted eight points compared to University Heights’ 12 points and the final score saw Clinton County pick up the loss, 49-28.

The Lady Lakers started Friday night’s game off to a good start as Clinton County struggled to get points on the board.

At the 4:09 mark in the first period, Tessa Roberts scored a field goal for Clinton County’s first points of the game, 7-2.

Russell County then put in a basket for a 9-2 lead, but a three pointer by Macy Campbell cut the lead to four points, 9-5 with 3:36 on the clock.

Russell County then put up nine unanswered points and held Clinton County scoreless for the remainder of the period for a first quarter score of 17-5.

The second quarter went much the same for the Lady Dawgs as offensive struggles started to set in.

Campbell hit a shot at the 5:40 mark, with another basket by Allee Hopper at the 5:15 mark to cut the lead, 22-9.

The remainder of the quarter would be all Russell County as the Lady Lakers finished the half with 14 points while holding the Lady Dawgs to only five, for a 36-14 halftime score.

Mackenzie Polston hit one of two from the line in the first part of the second half, followed by a free throw from Samantha Flowers at the 5:40 mark.

Clinton County didn’t score again until Hopper hit two free throws under the three minute mark, followed by a field goal to trail by 23 points, 43-20.

Russell County finished the quarter with a field goal to lead the Lady Dawgs by 25 points, 45-20.

During the final quarter, Clinton County couldn’t dig themselves out of the hole Russell County had put them in the previous three quarters, but the Lady Dawgs added 10 points to its side of the board while Russell County added 10 as well.

Clinton County lost the game by a final score of 55-30 and move to 0-3 in district play.

Tuesday night’s matchup was held in Burkesville for the first matchup between the Lady Dawgs and the Lady Panthers.

Clinton County drew first iron in Tuesday night’s game with a basket by Samantha Flowers, 2-0.

Cumberland County hit one of two from the line, but a basket by Hopper gave the Lady Dawgs a three point lead at the 4:31 mark, 4-1.

The Lady Panthers answered with a field goal to cut the Lady Dawgs’ lead to one. Rylee Stockton put in a basket to push the lead back to three points with 2:42 remaining in the period.

By the end of the period, Clinton County held on to a one point lead, 9-8.

The Lady Dawgs started the second quarter with a free throw to grab a two point lead, 10-8, but Cumberland County quickly added a basket to tie the score at 10.. The Lady Panthers then took the lead, 12-10, on a field goal, but Polston hit a basket to tie the score at 12 all with 5:26 on the clock.

The score went back and forth for the remainder of the period as Cumberland County took the lead, 14-12, but was tied again when Alexis Roberts hit a basket at the 3:01 mark.

Cumberland County hit two baskets at the end of the period to grab a four point halftime lead over the Lady Dawgs, 18-14.

During the second half, Clinton County’s offense began to take a nose dive as Cumberland County began to pull away.

The Lady Panthers put together a 10-3 run to take a nine point lead at the 4:16 mark, 28-17.

Clinton County then put together a run of its own with a three point play by Bree Boils, a basket by Alexis Roberts and a three point play by Tessa Roberts to cut the lead to four points at the 3:12 mark, 29-25.

By the end of the period, Cumberland County put up eight points to Clinton County’s five to lead the Lady Dawgs, 37-30, after three quarters.

With only one quarter remaining in the game, Clinton County’s fight didn’t fade as the Lady Dawgs continued to play hard.

During the first two minutes of the fourth quarter, Clinton County scored four points from the foul line, while Cumberland County scored six points from the foul line to lead, 43-36.

The first field goal of the fourth quarter came at the 5:53 mark by Cumberland County to reach a nine point lead, 45-36.

By the 4:10 mark, Clinton County had cut the lead to four points, 46-42, on a basket by Hopper, but two baskets and a free throw by Cumberland County saw the Lady Panthers take a nine point lead with 2:06 remaining in the game, 51-42.

Cumberland County would finish the game from the foul line, hitting four compared to Clinton County’s two. The Lady Panthers picked up the 11-point win with a final score of, 55-44.

Clinton County will be back at home after the Christmas holiday to host the Best of the Lakes Holiday Classic.

Bree Boils took the ball into the lane during Tuesday night’s game against Cumberland County. The Lady Dawgs lost the contest, 55-44.
