The Clinton County Lady Dawgs left it all out on the floor Monday night as Clinton County went into the first round of the district tournament as a number four seed taking on number one seeded Russell County.

For the first three quarters it looked as though the Lady Dawgs might pick up the upset.

During the first quarter, it took a while for either team to get started offensively. The first point of the game was scored at the 5:43 mark by Russell County from the free throw line.

Russell County hit both attempts to take a 2-0 lead. At the 5:13 mark, Russell County hit a field goal to move up by four points, but a three pointer made by Macy Campbell cut the lead to one point, 4-3.

Clinton County battled back with a field goal by Mackenzie Polston, 13-10, to end the quarter down by three.

At the start of the second quarter, Clinton County’s Christina Collins hit a long two pointer to cut the lead to one point, 13-12.Russell County hit a field goal on its next trip down the floor to move back on top by three points, but a three pointer by Collins tied the score at 15 with 7:06 on the clock.

The remaining time of the second quarter was scored by both teams from the foul line and when halftime had arrive, Clinton County was in a good position only down by one point, 22-21.

During first 17 seconds of the third quarter, Clinton County’s Collins hit her third three pointer of the game to give the Lady Dawgs its second lead of the game, 24-21.

The Lady Dawgs were firing on all cylinders and maintaining Russell County on defense as well.

Russell County tied the score at 24 on a field goal, but at the 5:48 mark, Alexis Roberts dropped in a three pointer to give the Lady Dawgs a three point lead, 27-24.

With 4:05 on the clock, Polston hit a field goal to put Clinton County up by five points, 29-24, but then something broke down for the Lady Dawgs and Russell County put together a 13-0 run to finish the quarter and take an eight point lead heading into the final period, 37-29.

Russell County reached a double digit lead at the start of the fourth quarter and Clinton County battled back and got to within five points, 39-34, but that was as close as the Lady Dawgs would get as Russell County started to pull away on offense.

For almost three full quarters, Clinton County gave Russell County all they wanted and the final score of 53-43 wasn’t a true indication of how close the game actually was. The Lady Dawgs graduate five seniors including, Bree Boils, Macy Campbell, Allee Hopper, Mackenzie Polston and Sam Flowers.
