The Clinton County Recreation Park Board held its regular meeting last Thursday night, June 29 at the park with seven members on hand, discussing several general items of business.

The board did begin discussing its annual single largest fundraiser of the year, the U.S. 127 Yard Sale that is coming up in about a month, the first full weekend of August.

Since park director Bobby Reneau, who generally handles about all aspects of getting booth spaces sold, marked off and making sure the park is ready for the sale, is still on a medical leave, the board agreed to hold a call meeting in a couple of weeks, hopefully with the park director present, to begin making final preparations for the sale.

The park is usually crowded with local and out-of-town vendors and bargain hunters for several days during the weekend sale period.

Although Reneau was still unable to attend last week’s meeting, Michael Hood, who has been hired by the board to fill in on a part-time basis to keep the park cleaned and maintained, was present.

Board members thanked Hood for the good job he has been doing, and the work he has put in at the park keeping it cleaned and maintained in Reneau’s absence.

Hood gave a report on the condition of the park, as well as noting the new picnic tables were being put together. Board members noted the park was “in good shape” and rest rooms were being cleaned daily.

Board Chairman Wayne Glover also made some opening announcements, including that Equity Group has made a $3,000 donation to the park. However, the funds may be earmarked for a certain project or projects.

Glover also told the board that Pepsi had made one payment of just under $1,000 to the board, with a second payment to be made soon.

Board member Randy Speck also noted the need for repairing or replacing the men’s and women’s signs above the restrooms and the board also discussed selling its own sign advertising for ball field fences next season.

Following the business meeting, Christy Guffey with the local extension service also discussed with board members the possibility of a grant that would provide covering and shade over several bleachers and around the playground area. She noted there was a good chance funds could be obtained to purchase several such coverings as well as possible funds in the future for an extra water fountain.

More details on those and other projects will be announced as information becomes available.

The board is tentatively scheduled to have a call meeting later this month with its next regular meeting scheduled for July 27 at 6 p.m. at the park, which is open to the public.
