Mrs. Ella Nunn in her book, Things I Remember About Clinton County, states that her father and his family came to Clinton County in 1888 to visit his uncles and heard “much talk about the little town of Cumberland City, which had a population of three hundred people at that time, and was larger than Albany, the county seat.” Being a photographer, he decided to move there. Cumberland City, Kentucky was the place to be.
Now, at long last, after more than 30 years and many hours of research in libraries, courthouses, cemeteries, census books, conversations and correspondence with others, the book The Coal Mining Town of Cumberland City, Kentucky, is now ready to share with you. This book contains information on the Poplar Mountain Coal Company, churches and schools in the Cumberland City, Pine Grove, Narvel or what was District 2 in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Also, it includes all of the Clinton County Post Offices and officers from 1832 through 1960 and other Post Office information through September 30, 1971, as well as some genealogy information on some of the early families of the area, pictures, documents, etc.
I wish to thank all of those who have contributed information and shared pictures for this project. A special thanks to my niece, Patricia Shelton Hicks, for typing up the 80-page index from my index cards and to my niece, Melissa Schmenk Cross, for helping with all of the digital and computer problems we faced in preparation for printing the book.
My hope is that those who are interested in this history will enjoy reading and learning about their heritage and it will be of help to others in research.
