A Gainesboro woman who was allegedly intoxicated when she caused a traffic crash that left one dead and several others injured has been indicted by the Putnam grand jury.
Sherry Jean Apple, 45, is charged with vehicular homicide and six counts of aggravated assault in the case, according to the indictment that was issued earlier this month after Tennessee Highway Patrol Trooper Sgt. Keven Norris presented evidence.
Apple was arrested last Friday by U.S. Marshal’s Task Force Agent Jeff Phann. She was booked into the Putnam jail. Her bond was set at $75,000.
The accident happened around 4:30 p.m. Nov. 21, 2010, at Mine Lick Creek Road and Ditty Road.
Kelly R. Spurlock, 43, of Gainesboro, was injured in the crash and died after being airlifted to Earlanger Hospital in Chattanooga.
State troopers who investigated the crash said at the time that Apple, driving a 2001 Toyota Camry, ran a stop sign and drove into the path of a 2004 Toyota SUV which was headed west on Ditty Road.
Three passengers, including Spurlock, were riding in Apple’s car.
The SUV was driven by Linda B. Young of Quebec, Tennessee. Five passengers, four of them children, were riding with her. The indictment alleges that Apple “did unlawfully and recklessly kill Kelly Ray Spurlock” by driving while she was intoxicated.
It also alleges that she committed aggravated assault against six others injured in the wreck, causing bodily injury “while utilizing a deadly weapon, an automobile.”
Apple is scheduled to be arraigned in Criminal Court on September 19.
