Dawgs fall twice last week

The Bulldogs moved to an even .500 this week after grabbing one win Friday night, but dropping games on Tuesday and Saturday to Monroe County and Greenwood respectively.

Clinton County hosted fourth region opponent Greenwood on Saturday in what ended up being a close game at the end.

The Bulldogs started the game with a putback by Noah Pruitt, but Greenwood knocked down a three pointer on its possession for a 3-2 lead.

Nick Brown hit a field goal at the 7:04 mark to take the one point lead, 4-3, followed by a basket by Seth Stockton, 6-3.

Greenwood tied the score at six, but baskets by Jackson Harlan and Ely Baker put the Dawgs up by four with 5:26 on the clock, 10-6.

The Gators hit a three pointer and a field goal to take a one point lead, but a basket by Pruitt gave the Dawgs the lead by one point, 12-11 with 2:09 on the clock in the first quarter.

Harlan hit two from the foul line to take a three point edge, but to finish out the quarter was Greenwood with a field goal to cut the lead to one point, 14-13.

At the start of the second quarter, Greenwood hit a field goal to take a one point lead over the Dawgs, 15-14. Stockton hit a field goal, followed by a field goal from Greenwood.

Both teams would go back and forth over the next several minutes.

At the 3:30 mark, both teams were tied at 25 until Greenwood hit back-to-back three pointers for a six point edge, 31-25.

Brown knocked down a three pointer of his own to cut the lead to three, but a field goal by Greenwood put the Gators up by five with 1:12 on the clock.

By the end of the half, Harlan added a basket to Clinton County’s side, but Greenwood came out on top at halftime, 35-30.

During the second half, both teams played much calmer and offense slowed down for both teams. After several minutes into the third quarter, Clinton County managed to tie the game at 39 on a 6-0 run.

Clinton County’s Harlan added to the score with another field goal to put the Dawgs up by two, 41-39 with 2:49 left in the quarter.

Greenwood cut the lead to one on a free throw, but three free throws by Clinton County saw the Dawgs grab a four point lead, 44-40, with 1:16 remaining in the period.

The Gators connected on a three point play with 44 seconds on the clock to cut the lead to one point, but a three pointer by Harlan with six seconds remaining in the period gave the Dawgs the lead at the start of the fourth, 47-43.

Greenwood opened the fourth quarter with a three pointer to cut the lead to one point, but two foul shots by Stockton put the Dawgs back up by three points, 49-46.

The Gators didn’t give up and stayed on the heals of the Dawgs for the remainder of the game, cutting the lead to one on a field goal, 49-48.

Stockton hit two free throws to give the Dawgs a three point cushion, 51-48, but a 5-0 run saw Greenwood take a two point lead, 53-51, with 4:44 on the clock.

Two more points came from Stockton to tie the game at 53, but Greenwood had an answer with a three pointer, 56-53. Brown hit a field goal to cut the lead to one point, then Greenwood made its move to secure a lead as the Gators put together a 5-0 run.

As Greenwood led the game, 61-55 with 2:06 on the clock, Clinton County tried to chip away at the lead.

Stockton hit a field goal, but two foul shots by Greenwood canceled it out, 63-57.

Harlan hit a field goal with 1:31 remaining, followed by a free throw by Stockton to cut the lead to three points, 63-60.

With 55 seconds left, Greenwood turned the ball over on an inbounds play. On the next possession, Stockton went to the line and hit two of two to cut the lead to one point with 50 seconds left.

Greenwood hit two foul shots to put the Gators up by three with 47 seconds remaining, followed by two free throws by Stockton to cut the lead back to one point with 36 seconds on the clock, 65-64, but that was as close as Clinton County would come as Greenwood added three points to the board in the final seconds to grab the 67-64 win.

Although in a losing effort, Clinton County’s Seth Stockton grabbed a double-double with 19 points and 19 rebounds for the game.

Metcalfe County 45

Clinton County traveled to Metcalfe County on Friday night of last week for the first game of the seasonal district competition.

In the first quarter, Clinton County struggled from the floor, allowing Metcalfe County to stay close in the first minutes.

Metcalfe County took its first lead early in the game, 6-4, but two free throws by Stockton tied the score at six. Metcalfe County hit a free throw to regain the lead, 7-6, but a 10-0 run saw Clinton County reach a 16-7 lead. Metcalfe County hit two field goals at the end of the period to cut the lead to five at the end of the first quarter, 16-11.

Clinton County continued to struggle during the second quarter, but remained in control.

By the time the second quarter was over, Clinton County had found its groove and led the Hornets 35-22.

The second half went much the same way with Clinton County leading at the end of three, 48-27 and picking up the win after four quarters of play, 62-46.

Clinton County traveled to Monroe County on Tuesday to take on the Falcons in what is still a good rivalry for both teams.

Monroe County drew first blood with a three pointer, but Harlan answerd with a three pointer, followed by back-to-back field goals by Brown, 7-3. After Monroe County put three points on the board and cut the lead to one, Brown made a three point play to move the Dawgs up by four points, 10-6.

At the 3:20 mark, Harlan drained a three pointer to put the Dawgs up 13-6. By the time the quarter came to a close, Clinton County had secured a four point lead after a reverse layup by Harlan was made, 18-14.

The game went back and forth during the second quarter with neither team getting out of reach of each other. By the time the eight minute period ended, both teams were tied at 35 heading into the second half of play.

During the third quarter, Monroe County jumped out on top with back-to-back field goals.

Later in the period, Clinton County took the lead on a three pointer by Harlan, 44-43.

Harlan then added another basket to Clinton County’s side to put the Dawgs ahead by three points, 46-43.

During the closing minutes of the third period, Clinton County found themselves once again tied, 50-50.

It seemed Clinton County had control of the game for the most part, taking a six point lead at the 3:30 mark, 60-54.

Monroe County didn’t give up and eventually regained the lead at the 1:35 mark, 62-61 by putting together a 7-1 run.

At the 1:13 mark, Harlan drained two free throws to take the lead by one point, 63-62.

Monroe County gained the lead with 52 seconds on the clock on two made free throws.

With Clinton County in full desperation mode, the Bulldogs missed its attempt to take the lead and foul trying to recover the rebound, sending Monroe County to the line.

The Falcons hit one shot from the foul line with 1.2 seconds remaining, thus taking the win away from the Dawgs, 65-64.

Clinton County was back in action Tuesday night, too late for press deadline, at home against Cumberland County. The Dawgs will travel to Russell County on Friday to take on the Lakers.
