There called fall sports, but it still feels like summer
Not complaining, mind you, but even though we’re talking about golf, football and the rest of the lineup of “fall” sports at Clinton County High School, it still feels like summer outside.
Hopefully, that will continue right up until it’s time to start basketball season in December, but that’s a lot of wishful thinking.
Welcome to a familiar face – in a new place
On to the business at hand, and first up we have to welcome a new Athletic Director at Clinton County High School, and although he’s new at this desk, he’s certainly a familiar face to those of us who have been around the program for awhile.
Mike Beard, who has held a number of positions within the athletic department in the past several years, was named to hold down the top rung in the athletic department at C.C.H.S. last week.
It’s always good to hire someone who has been through the mill, so to speak, and Mike has certainly been involved in a host of the athletic positions. A former head boys’ basketball coach and now an assistant coach alongside head coach Todd Messer, Beard was also a long-time head coach for the baseball program at Clinton County High School as well as holding the position of Cross Country Coach during that program’s inaugural years.
Mike’s been a close personal friend for a long, long time, and I’m looking forward to continue working with him.
A rough start for the Dawgs
A separate article in this week’s Sports gives a rundown of Friday night’s rough start for the gridiron Dawgs in the 2011 season opener, giving up a 49-0 loss at the hands of neighboring Wayne County.
Hopefully things can be turned around for Coach Miller and his crew this Friday night when we play host to the Trimble County Raiders.
Trimble County will also enter Friday night’s game with a 0-1 record, coming off their own season-opening loss that came at the hands of Berea, 19-8.
Kickoff at Bulldog field is set for 7:00 p.m. (note the time change from earlier printed schedules). Gates will open at 5:00 p.m. for those wishing to tailgate – non-tailgating fans will find their gates open at 5:30.
Golf Dawgs are hot
As I mentioned in this space a few weeks ago – seems there’s nothing quiet as hot this year as our own Golf Dawgs.
As a team, they traveled to Metcalfe County’s Summer Shade course last week to take on the Hornets. Clinton County finished the match with a team total four-under par 140.
Congrats to the team – a separate article outlines last week’s results of this 9-0 squad. As I noted earlier – this bunch is fun to watch.
