The filing deadline for non-partisan city and school board seats is getting closer as the month of August approaches, but thus far, after a brief flurry of activity early, filing has almost ceased.
As of early last month, when candidates were able to begin filing for non-partisan seats for Albany Mayor, city council and board of education races, only one person has filed since, according to records from the Clinton County Court Clerk’s office.
Rene York has filed for a seat on the Albany City Council, bringing the total number of candidates thus far to seven people, as of Tuesday morning, July 3.
Of those who have filed for office, three each have filed for the city’s highest office of mayor, all non-incumbents as current long-time Mayor Nicky Smith has apparently decided not to seek re-election this year.
Of the three candidates thus far for Albany City Council, only one incumbent has filed and one incumbent has filed for a seat on the Clinton County Board of Education.
Also, three of the total seven candidates that are currently in the running are female, including two women seeking council seats and one female in the race for mayor.
Additional election information, including filing deadlines, etc. will be published in next week’s edition of the Clinton County News.
