A mother and her boyfriend have been indicted for murder in the death of her 17-month-old son, Staten Stephenson.

The Wayne County Grand Jury met on Monday, September 12 and returned an indictment against Kayla C. Lord and Jared D. Futrell for murder. The two were also indicted for criminal abuse first degree.

Lord and Futrell were arrested on July 27, the day after the toddler died at the University of Kentucky Medical Center. The boy had been transported to the Lexington hospital on July 16, after he was taken to the Wayne County Hospital Emergency Room for treatment of injuries.

According to a complaint filed in the case, the baby arrived at Wayne County Hospital with “evidence of blunt force trauma and was unresponsive.”

Both Lord and Futrell remain lodged in Wayne County Detention Center and a cash bond of $100,000 has been set for each one.
