Lady Dawgs pick up fourth place in tourney

The Clinton County Lady Dawgs hosted its own holiday tournament last week with the Best of the Lakes Holiday Classic at Lindle Castle Gymnasium.

The tournament held three days of games with eight teams involved, including the Lady Dawgs.

Clinton County went 2-0 in the tournament before losing the final game of pool play. The Lady Dawgs then dropped the tournament game held Saturday afternoon to Wayne County to pick up fourth place.

Clinton County played McCreary Central in its first game of the Best of the Lakes Holiday Classic.

In the first quarter, Clinton County started off slow, but kept pace with the Lady Dragons.

Rylee Stockton hit two free throws to start it off for the Lady Dawgs, but a three pointer by McCreary Central put the Lady Dragons up by one with a minute into the game.

Alexis Roberts hit a three pointer to take a two point lead with 6:15 on the clock.

Both teams went back and forth during the next four minutes and at the 2:35 mark, McCreary Central started a 10-1 run to take a nine point lead, 20-11.

Clinton County pulled it together in the final 30 seconds and cut the lead to five points on back-to-back baskets from Braylee Mann and Stockton, 20-15, at the end of the first.

To start the second quarter, McCreary Central hit a free throw and a field goal to extend the lead to eight points, 23-15.

Clinton County then put together a 5-0 run with a three pointer by Abbi Young and a field goal by Mann, 23-20. McCreary Central hit a field goal with 4:40 remaining in the half, but Clinton County came back and hit two field goals to cut the lead to one, 25-24.

McCreary Central hit two free throws to extend its lead to three points, but with 2:01 on the clock, two free throws by Mann and one by Landree Moons tied the score at 27, McCreary Central hit a field goal to close out the half, 29-27.

Both teams were head to head during the third quarter.

At the 3:46 mark, Clinton County had reached a five point lead, 39-34, but a 6-0 run by McCreary Central put the Lady Dragons up by one point with 45 seconds remaining in the quarter.

Stockton hit a field goal to take a one point lead with 30 seconds remaining and Mann hit a field goal with nine seconds left for a three point lead, 43-40. With time running out in the third quarter, McCreary Central hit a shot to cut the lead to one point, 43-42.

At the start of the fourth quarter, Clinton County went up by three points on a field goal by Mann, but McCreary Central hit a field goal and two free throws to take a one point lead, 46-45.

With 6:27 remaining in the game, Mann hit a field goal to regain a one point lead, 47-46, followed by a three point play to lead by four, 50-46.

McCreary Central cut the lead to one point on a three pointer with 4:55 remaining, but Mann hit a field goal to put the Lady Dawgs up by three points, 52-49.

During the final two minutes, Clinton County went on a scoring spree that would seal the deal for the Lady Dawgs, including a field goal by Stockton, two free throws by Roberts and four free throws by Mann for a 61-50 win.

Harlan 53

The Clinton County Lady Dawgs took on Harlan last Friday night and started out with a 4-0 lead with baskets by Mann and Stockton.

Harlan responded with a field goal, but Mann and Roberts hit back-to-back field goals to take an 8-2.

At the 3:15 mark, Harlan hit a three pointer to cut the lead to three points, 8-5. Mann hit a field goal at the 3:01 mark to push the lead back to five points, 10-5.

Both teams battled on both the offiensive and defensive end of the floor for the remainder of the first quarter, but it was the Lady Dawgs who pulled away in the last 1:23 with baskets by Mann and Young for a 20-15 first quarter lead.

Stockton opened up the second quarter with a field goal to put the Lady Dawgs up by seven, 22-15. Harlan then hit two free throws to cut the lead back to five points.

Young put up a field goal at the 6:01 mark, but Harlan answered with a field goal of its own, 24-19.

Roberts then hit two free throws, followed by a field goal from Mann for a 27-19 lead with 3:40 remaining in the half.

Clinton County remained on top for the remainer of the second quarter, but Harlan didn’t go away quitely.

By the end of the period, Roberts hit a field goal to send the Lady Dawgs into the locker room at the half with a 33-28 lead.

Clinton County came out of the locker room at halftime and went cold from the floor, missing its first six shots, while Harlan made a small comeback and cut the lead to two points, 33-31.

Roberts hit two free throws to extend the lead to four points, but a three pointer by Harlan cut the lead to one point, 35-34, with 4:01 remaining in the third quarter. Makenzie Cope knocked down one free throw to extend the lead to two points, 36-34.

Harlan hit one of two from the line to cut the lead to one point, but Mann hit a free throw to push the lead back out to two points, 37-35.

At the 2:24 mark, Stockton hit a field goal for the first one after 11 misses in the second half.

Mann followed with a field goal to put the Lady Dawgs up by six points, 41-35. Harlan responded with field goal and Mann grabbed another basket to lead 43-37. Harlan scored just before the quarter ended to see the Lady Dawgs up by four, 43-39 as the fourth quarter got underway.

In the final period, Mann hit two free throws to put Clinton County up by three, 45-42, but Harlan scored the next five points to take its first lead of the game at 47-45.

Clinton County’s Stockton hit a field goal to tie the score, but Harlan hit a field goal to regain the lead at 49-47.

The Lady Dawgs then scored five straight points to take a three point lead with 3:50 on the clock, 52-49.

Harlan scored back-to-back goals to take a one point lead with 1:10 remaining in the game, 53-52, but a basket by Stockton put the Dawgs up by one, followed by a free throw by Mann for a two point lead with 35 seconds left, 55-53.

Harlan misses it change to tie the score and fouls Roberts on the rebound, sending her to the line for two shots. Roberts made the two free throws to seal the deal with 15 seconds remaining in the game for a 57-53 win.

With two wins under the Lady Dawgs’ belt for the Best of the Lakes Holiday Classic, Clinton County took on Ballard in the third game of pool play on Saturday afternoon with the winner of the game moving on to the championship game later that night.

Clinton County came out early and jumped out to a 3-1 lead with a three pointer by Stockton.

Ballard answered with a field goal to tie the score, but two free throws from Stockton put the Lady Dawgs up by two with 4:47 on the clock.

Ballard came right back with a free throw to cut the lead to one, but a free throw by Moons pushed the lead back to two points, 6-4.

With under three minutes to play, Ballard hit two field goals and two free throws to take a 10-6 lead over the Lady Dawgs.

Stockton hit a field goal to cut the lead to two points, but a three pointer and a field goal sealed an 11-2 run for Ballard to finish the first quarter with a 15-8 lead.

With Ballard in full court press mode, Clinton County struggled on offense.

Stockton opened up the second quarter with a field goal to cut the lead to five points, 15-10, but Ballard answered back with a field goal to push the lead back to seven, 17-10.

Both teams matched point for point for the next several minutes until Ballard started scoring at will and took a 12 point lead with 5:54 on the clock, 24-12.

Young answered at the line with two free throws, but a field goal by Ballard pushed the lead to 12, 26-14 with 3:12 remaining in the half.

By the end of the half, Clinton County went into the locker room down by 13 points, 33-20.

Clinton County couldn’t ever get back into the groove of the game during the third quarter, even though Clinton County outscored Ballard 15-13. By the end of the period, Ballard had still maintained a 10 point lead, 45-35.

More of the same from Ballard in the fourth quarter as a Clinton County couldn’t handle the full court press put on by the Lady Bruins.

By the time the final eight minutes had been played, Clinton County only managed to score six points compared to Ballard’s 12. Clinton County lost its first game in pool play, 57-41 and moved on to face Wayne County in the consolution game.

The Clinton County Lady Dawgs took on Wayne County in the quest for third place in the Best of the Lakes Holiday Classic on Saturday night.

The Lady Dawgs got off to a rocky start as Wayne County made the first nine points of the game.

Clinton County finally scored on a free throw by Mann at the 3:15 mark.

Wayne County continued to score at will and finshed the quarter with 15 points as the Lady Dawgs only put up five.

During the second quarter, Clinton County started to show signs of life even though Wayne County scored the first two points of the period, 18-5.

Mann dropped in a field goal and one free throw to cut the lead to nine points, but Wayne County answered with a three pointer, 21-9.

Clinton County couldn’t find a way to score during the second period and found itself trailing by 14 at the half, 29-15.

The second half went much the same for the Lady Dawgs. Wayne County continued to control the game on both offense and defense and wouldn’t let the Lady Dawgs back into the game.

At the end of the third quarter, Wayne County had taken a 40-22 lead.

The fourth quarter for the Lady Dawgs saw Clinton County outscore Wayne County in the eight minute period, 24-15, but Wayne County had already gained a commanding lead in the third quarter to which Clinton County could never recover.

By the end of the fourth quarter, Clinton County had lost the contest by nine points, 55-46, and picked up fourth place in the Best of the Lakes Holiday Classic.

The Lady Dawgs moved to 5-9 on the year and will host Pickett County, Tennessee on Thursday, January 3 and will travel to Metcalfe County on Friday, January 4.

Braylee Mann drove the lane in the second half against Harlan in the Best of the Lakes Holiday Classic last week. Mann finished the game with 23 points as the Lady Dawgs took the win.

Rylee Stockton went in for a layup in the second half against Harlan. Clinton County won the contest by a final score of 57-53. Stockton finished with 12 points.
