Dawgs advance in All ‘A’

The Clinton County Bulldogs moved to a perfect 6-0 in district play last week after knocking off Cumberland County and Russell County on Tuesday and Friday respectively.

Clinton County also won big against Metcalfe County on Monday night in the first round game of the 4th Region All “A” Classic Tournament.

Clinton County came out Monday night ready for a battle in hopes of moving on to the semi-finals of the All “A” Classic regional tournnament.

The Dawgs started out the game with a 9-0 jump before Metcalfe County hit a three pointer with 5:33 on the clock.

The rest of the quarter was all Clinton County as the Bulldogs continued to score at will.

Clinton County held Metcalfe County to only nine first quarter points while putting up 24 in the first period.

During the second quarter, offense slowed down for the Dawgs somewhat.

Clinton County’s Chase Stines and Nick Brown both scored field goals in the second quarter to end a 12-2 run. Metcalfe County then put together a 9-1 run to cut the lead to 12 points, 30-18.

Stines hit a three pointer to put the Dawgs up 15 points at the 3:06 mark, but Metcalfe County didn’t lay down and give up, eventually cutting the lead to 11 points towards the end of the half, 33-22.

Clinton County’s Stines and Jackson Harlan hit two field goals to end the half with the Dawgs up by 15, 37-22.

During the second half, Clinton County stepped up its defense and only allowed Metcalfe to score seven points in the entire eight minutes.

Metcalfe County didn’t score until the 3:14 mark on two free throws. By that time Clinton County had posted nine points for a 49-24 lead.

The Hornets would only score five more points for the rest of the period as Clinton County led after three, 54-29.

The fourth quarter was just a formality for the Dawgs. Metcalfe County was no match for Clinton County’s ability to score and defense combined. The Dawgs won by a final of 68-44.

Clinton County will move on to the semi-finals against Monroe County Thursday night, January 17, at 6 p.m. at Todd County Central High School.

Clinton County opened up on a good note by out scoring Russell County 18-10 in the first quarter and setting the pace for the entire game.

Seth Stockton hit two field goals and a three pointer, followed by two field goals from Jackson Harlan, one three pointer by Chase Stines and a basket by Caleb Guffey.

During the second quarter, Clinton County scored at will putting up 36 points to Russell County’s 14.

Harlan hit four three pointers in the quarter, along with a field goal and two free throws by Stockton, Evan Dearborn and Nick Brown added six points each to the board, as did Guffey.

Clinton County led at the half, 52-24.

After halftime, Clinton County was outscored in the third quarter, 18-17, but still maintained the lead at the end of the period, 69-42.

The Dawgs were also outscored in the fourth quarter, 9-8, but the 36 points put up in the second quarter was enough to coast in the second half and grab the 77-51 win.

What started out as a blowout in the first half, with Clinton County putting up 51 points in two quarters, went down hill in the second half and forced the Dawgs to hold tight for the victory.

During the first quarter, Clinton County scored at will and put up 26 points over Cumberland County while the Panthers only posted nine points for the period.

During the second quarter, Clinton County continued to control the game and posted 25 points to Cumberland County’s 22 points for a halftime lead of 51-31.

The Panthers started inching its way back in the third quarter and cut the lead to 10 points with 1:40 on the clock, 59-49.

With the Dawgs up by 20 at the half, Clinton County couldn’t find that “killer instinct” to completely put away the Panthers in the second half.

By the end of the third quarter, Clinton County had rallied and stopped the bleeding on a three point play by Stockton, 65-54.

Stockton continued to score as he opened up the fourth quarter with two field goals for a 69-54 lead.

Cumberland County answered with a 7-0 run to cut the lead down to eight points, 69-61, but two baskets by Dearborn and one by Harlan put the Dawgs back up by 14 points, 75-61, with 4:06 on the clock.

The Dawgs continued to hold strong for the remainder of the game and put up 10 points in the final four minutes to take the win, 85-73.
