Rollercoaster sale begins

The 26th annual Rollercoaster Yard Sale will roll across the hills and hollows of southern Kentucky and northern Tennessee this weekend, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, September 29, 30 and October 1.

Although still not drawing yard sale enthusiasts to the tune of the U.S. 127 Sale held each August, the Rollercoaster Sale has gained popularity and more travelers each year.

The event features over 150 miles of treasures to discover, plus little shops and eateries located along the winding, hilly “roller-coaster” route.”

Local diners, drive-ins and country cooking, BBQ joints, farmers’ markets, flea markets, antiques, crafts, souvenir items, historic sites, recreation areas, and more can be found along the way in one of the most scenic areas of rural Kentucky and Tennessee.

Everyone living along the route is encouraged to spruce up their yards and business locations and, if you need a little extra money, to clean our storage areas and set up a sales location for those items you no longer need. This is also an opportunity for civic organizations to plan fundraisers, the organizers say. If you would like to list your individual yard sale on the internet, just visit www.garagesaletracker.com to create your listing.

Three primary locations in the Albany/Clinton County area will have the major vendor sale sites, including downtown Albany, Mountain View Park and Cumberland Corner Mart.

Started in 1986 by Sarah Ann Bowers, it is one of her proudest accomplishments. Bowers wanted to improve the beautiful Cordell Hull Highway and needed to prove that this road was very well traveled. Therefore, she put a yard sale on the highway and in 2001, over 140,000 visitors traveled to the Rollercoaster Sale. After 10 years, the attendance surpassed that of the Kentucky Derby.

Today, Hwy. 63, a Kentucky Scenic Byway, is a road well traveled and has been greatly improved, due to Bowers’ persistent efforts. She also was instrumental in bringing the Rollercoaster Yard Sale into Tennessee in 2002–from Hwy. 63 through Clay County and Celina, Overton County and Livingston and through Pickett County and Byrdstown.

Now the Rollercoaster route has been extended to go completely around Dale Hollow Lake picking up at Hwy. 127 at the Tennessee and Kentucky state line at Static–and then north on Hwy. 127 through Clinton County and Albany, then turn west on Hwy. 90 to Cumberland County and Burkesville, continuing on Hwy. 90 back to Glasgow and Cave City.

Some Rollercoaster events will include the Cumberland River Cruise-In at Alex Montgomery Chevrolet in Burkesville on Saturday; a tractor and truck pull in Celina on Saturday at 3 p.m. and the Dale Hollow Bass Classic Fishing Tournament Saturday and Sunday, October 1 and 2.
