March Madness starts now… in February

Come Thursday night, we put a lid on this 2018-19 regular season roundball campaign, throw out the records and start all over again.

Yep, for Kentucky high school basketball teams, players, coaches and fans, March Madness starts Monday – on February 18.

Finish the season at Barren first

The traditional end to the regular season is the matchup Thursday night against Barren County, this year playing out at Barren County.

Fans be forewarned – it will likely be Senior Night for Barren, and they are always very patient with us when it falls on their night in Albany, so sit back, grab some popcorn and enjoy the eventing.

Another note about Thursday night’s outing at Barren is that for whatever reasons, the boys’ varsity game will be played first, with a 6:00 p.m. tip, followed by girls’ varsity action for the nightcap game.

Radio Auction is Friday night

A separate article beginning this week on page 1 gives more details about this Friday night’s Basketball Booster Club Radio Auction.

A host of volunteers – mostly parents, players and fans – will join myself and co-host Jack Flowers for the now long running and traditional season ending fundraiser.

As always, we will have a huge assortment of items available for purchase – large and small, so tune in or come out, bid and buy and support our varsity basketball players.

Congrats to the frosh Dawgs

Our freshman Bulldogs put together back to back wins last Saturday morning over at Edmonton, to pick up the championship hardware in the 16th District Freshman Tournament.

After defeating Metcalfe County in the tournament opening round, the freshman Dawgs went on to pick up the championship game win over Cumberland County.

Congrats are in order for the win, and thanks for making the future of Bulldog basketball continue to look so bright!

A team photo with the new trophy case addition can be found elsewhere this week in SPORTS.

Now, for tourney notes

Of course we’re headed west to Edmonton next week and our Bulldogs, with the coveted No. 1 seed, will be playing on Monday night, February 18, going up against Cumberland County in a game slotted for a 7:30 tip.

Fan support behind our Bulldogs will be of utmost importance-it’s tournament time and the opponent we face, the Panthers of Cumberland County, is playing some of their best basketball of the year. Head on over and get behind our Bulldogs, and let’s put them into the championship round of this 16th District tourney, and a guaranteed trip to the 4th Region next week.

Our Lady Dawgs will take the floor as the No. 3 seeded team, going up against the No. 2 seeded team on Tuesday night, with a slated 6:00 p.m. tip.

Likewise, our Lady Dawgs need to see a lot of blue and white on our side of the gym next Tuesday night. We’re playing some very good basketball at this point in the season, coming off back to back wins as of this writing on Tuesday morning against Monroe County and Warren Central.

A win over the Lady Lakers will also put our Lady Dawgs into the championship game of this 16th District,as well as a trip to Bowling Green next week for the 4th Region Tournament.

These youngsters need to know our community is behind them – it’s a short drive to the MCHS gymnasium – be there Monday and Tuesday.

Go Dawgs, Go Lady Dawgs.

I’m in the gym, don’t call me until April!
