Golf Dawgs Sawyer Stalcup, Evan Shelley qualify for state tourney
Clinton County High School’s varstiy golf program expereienced it’s best day ever during Monday’s playing of the Regional Tournament at Dale Hollow Lake State Resort Park Golf Course, when two Golf Dawgs finished the tournament in position to qualify for next week’s KHSAA State Golf Tournament in Bowling Green.
Evan Shelley and Sawyer Stalcup finished their regional rounds Monday afternoon and the end result was Stalcup placing second overall as an individual with a one under par 71 and Shelley finishing third overall with a four over par 76.
It’s been more than 10 years since Clinton County High School had a golfer to qualify for the state tournament, but this is the first time in school history that teammates will get the chance to play in the Kentucky High School Athletic Association’s Golf State Tournament.
As a team, Clinton County finished in fifth place with a team score of 323, competing in the Region 3 boys’ golf competition where some 19 schools are grouped together.
In golf, players have a chance to qualify for the state level as a team and as individuals. Monday’s regional tournament saw Clinton County come close to doing both as the Golf Dawgs were only five strokes back from qualifying as a team.

The last time a Clinton County golfer qualified for the KHSAA state tournament was in 2000, when Amanda Dubravetz qualified for the girls tournament.
Stalcup is the son of J.R. and Patricia Stalcup. Shelley is the son of Charlotte Bernard. Both are seniors at Clinton County High School.
The state tournament will be next Tuesday and Wednesday, October 4 and 5, at Bowling Green Country Club.
