Saturday, June 15th:

10:00 a.m.: Beginning Spinning Wheel

Sue Duncan will be teaching us the basics of the spinning wheel. We will learn to card, spin, and ply. You will get to practice on different spinning wheels and see which wheel is best for you! This is a great beginners class and you will leave with a better understanding of the spinning wheel. This class is $25 per person and all supplies will be provided including various spinning wheels! This program is possible through a grant from the Tennessee Arts Commission.

12:00 p.m.: Build a Birdhouse

Come out to Cordell Hull Birthplace and make your own birdhouse! You will be provided with pre-cut wood and all the tools needed to build your very own birdhouse. Once you’ve built your birdhouse, you will get to paint and design it anyway you want! This program is $5 per person and is for children ages eight-16. There is limited registration so sign up now!

2:00 p.m.: Dad Rocks

Come to the park and spend some time making fun gifts for your Dad! Interpreter Ranger Abbey will help you paint and design rocks for you to give your Dad on Father’s Day! We will be meeting behind the office building.

3:00 p.m.: Dad Trophies

Come make a trophy for the Best Dad! Interpreter Ranger Abbey will be showing you how to make a trophy so you can give it to your Dad on Father’s Day! You’ll be able to decorate it and have a great gift for the “Best Dad”. We will be meeting in the park office building.

Sunday, June 16th:

9:00 a.m.: Father’s Day Hike

Bring your Dad’s out to the park for a fun hike to Bunkum Cave! The hike is moderate, and roughly two miles, round trip. It will take about an hour and a half to complete. Be sure to wear sturdy shoes and bring plenty of water. We will meet at the trailhead.

1:00 p.m.: Animals Tracks and Pelts

Join our interpretive rangers to learn about the native wildlife, their tracks, and their furs. We will have animal track molds so you can make an animal track of your own. We will have animal pelts to show as well. We will meet in the park office.

2:00 p.m.: Needle Felting

Needle felting is the art of compressing wool fibers together to form a non-woven fabric. Learn to make this craft with cookie cutters and wool. Bring your favorite cookie cutter to use in the class or use one of ours! Children need to be eight years and older to participate and accommodated by an adult. We will meet in the park office. There is a 15-person limit for this class and it is $3 per person. You can sign up at tnstateparks.com under Cordell Hull Birthplace State Park upcoming events.

Friday, June 21st:

1:00 p.m.: Children’s Games & Make Your Own Toys

Join Interpreter Ranger Abbey at the park and have some fun playing with historical children’s toys and games. After playing, you’ll be able to make a few toys of your own that you can take home and enjoy! We will meet in the park office.

Saturday, June 22nd:

10:00 a.m.: TN Promise Trail Cleanup

Join us on June 22nd, TN Promise Saturday, for a day of volunteer work. At Cordell Hull Birthplace State Park, we have a trail cleanup scheduled for any volunteers. Be sure to wear sturdy shoes and bring your water bottles. Be sure to RSVP before June 22nd if you plan on attending. We will meet at the trailhead

1:00 p.m.: Yarn Dolls

Come and join Interpretive Ranger Abbey at Cordell Hull Birthplace. She’ll be teaching you how to make historical Yarn Dolls that you can take home with you! We will be meeting in the park office.

2:00 p.m.: Kid’s Hour

Join us for some summer fun! Our interpretive rangers will be at the parking lot with bubbles, chalk, hula hoops, and more! We will have a section of the parking lot marked off for the chalk art. Come and enjoy the summer weather!

Sunday, June 23rd:

1:00 p.m.: Origami Hour

We will start with Interpretive Ranger Abbey teaching you how to make a paper airplane and you can decorate it too. We’ll compete to see whose plane flies the farthest! Then we will learn and design an origami boat and learn basic water safety. We will meet in the park office.

2:00 p.m.: Make Your Own Felt Animal

Join us in the park office to make a fun craft! We will have felt and stencils so you can make your own felt animal. You can spend time decorating it however you would like.

Monday, June 24th:

11:30 a.m.: Lunch and Learn

Come join us for a weekly series of programs to kick off the summer feeding program. Any participants 18 and under will receive a free lunch during this event. This week we will learn about our native pollinators, bees. We will learn about pollinators and you get to participate in a fun craft. We will meet at the picnic tables by the museum. (If there is inclement weather then we will meet in the park office). The food is provided by the Pickett County Summer Feeding Program. They will provide breakfast and lunch during the summer for all children 18 and under.

12:30 p.m.: DIY Paper Fan

Join Interpretive Ranger Abbey and learn how to make your own paper fan! You’ll be able to decorate your fan and take it home when you’re finished. We will meet in the park office.

Thursday, June 27th:

9:00 a.m.: Basket Weaving

Gwen Morris will teach you how to weave a beach tote basket. This class is for beginners and will be a great way to learn how to weave a basket. You will need to bring a bucket, hand towel, clothespins, and measuring tape. Make sure to bring a lunch. This class is $40 per person. The class is currently full, but we can add you to the waiting list in case of a cancelation.

Saturday, June 29th:

All Day – Join us at the Byrdstown’s Fourth of July celebration. We’ll have fun activities and demonstrations for all ages. The Friends of Cordell Hull will also be conducting a membership drive.

Sunday, June 30th:

3:00 p.m.: Sack Races & 3 Legged Races

Come to Cordell Hull Birthplace for some children’s games. Interpretive Ranger Abbey will teach you about the historical games and we’ll play them too! We will meet behind the park office.

7:30 p.m.: Primitive Fire-Making & Campfire Games with S’mores

Interested in survival skills and bushcraft? Learn to start a fire without modern conveniences! Everyone will get a chance to try their hand at flint and steel. Afterward we’ll enjoy fun games and s’mores around the campfire. No charge for the program, donations will be accepted for the s’mores.

Save-the-Date:

August 31st – Apple Butter Day: Enjoy a day of traditional foodways demonstrations, workshops and speakers. We’ll be making apple butter and pressing fresh cider all day in period dress and using traditional techniques. Fred and Jill Sauceman will speak about dried apple stack cake and Dr. Michael Birdwell will speak on fermenting apples. In the morning, we’ll have Amanda Woody to teach a canning workshop. This will be a great opportunity to learn about traditional food and culture.

September 27th & 28th – Cordell Hull Day: On Saturday, September 28th, the general public is invited for a day of music, historical interpretation, workshops, traditional crafts and storytelling. School groups and homeschoolers are welcome to come to our school day on Friday the 27th. Vendors and demonstrators are still welcome to apply to participate. Preference is given to traditional crafters and& artisans.

October 26th – Halloween in the Park: Our annual Haunted Trail experience will return, along with new spooky fun for the whole family.
