A Wayne County man has been indicted for murder by the local grand jury. The murder charge was returned Tuesday, July 16 against John Denney, who was involved in a fatal accident in Monticello on October 25, 2018.

Robert Allen Hicks, 48, of Monticello, died in the three-vehicle accident that occurred on KY 90 near the intersection of Gregory Street.

According to a report released at the time of the crash, Denney was traveling east on KY 90 when the vehicle he was driving traveled into the westbound lane and sideswiped a car being driven by Amanda Crabtree.

After striking the Crabtree vehicle, Denney’s vehicle continued traveling east in the westbound lane and struck the vehicle driven by Hicks head-on.

Hicks was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. Denney was flown to the University of Kentucky Medical Center for treatment of his injuries.

The indictment returned alleges Denney was operating “a motor vehicle under the influence of methamphetamine and/or other intoxicating substances” when the accident occurred. He was also indicted for first degree assault and for persistent felony offender second degree.

Denney, 33, is lodged in the Wayne County Detention Center. He will be arraigned on August 6 at 9 p.m. in Wayne Circuit Court.
