A Jackson County Middle School student was arrested in connection with a weapon confiscated at the school on Tuesday, September 10.

The student has been charged with possession of a weapon on school grounds and Domestic Terrorist Act.

“Additional charges may be filed as the investigation continues,” Sheriff Marty Hinson said. “More information will come out later and possibly later this week as the investigation is ongoing.”

Multiple reports of a possible gun found in the middle school circulated Tuesday morning after school district officials issued a call to parents informing them of the situation.

Sheriff Hinson could not confirm what the weapon found in the school was and whether or not the weapon was a gun.

Jackson County Director of Schools Kristy Brown told the Herald-Citizen on Tuesday that they were still working out details of the situation.

“The sheriff’s department is working with us on this. We’re working on the details and as I’m able to, I’ll release those details,” Brown said. “The important thing is our students are safe and accounted for.”
