The Clinton County High School Football team, under the direction of first year Head Coach Rocky Tallent, managed to shutout district opponent Metcalfe County on Friday night, 35-0, for its first district win of the season.

Tallent said he was proud of his team because he felt like for the first time this season, the team has played a complete game.

“They only completed three passes on us all night. Our defense played well, but I was more proud of the fact they actually played a whole game.”

Tallent said his team has struggled with putting an entire game together.

“We controlled the game pretty much from start to finish,” Tallent said.

Friday night’s game was standing room only with homecoming festivities as well as Relay for Life Cancer night being held at halftime.

Just as the first quarter ended, Clinton County was up 7-0, the game was postponed due to lightning and rain that had moved into the area.

Tallent said the game didn’t get started again until 8:55 p.m.

“We came back out after the delay and stalled a little bit on offense. We turned the ball over and they were able to move the ball a little bit more,” Tallent said. “They actually got down to the one yard line and we had a huge goal line stand against them. We went into the locker room at halftime with a 7-0 lead.”

Tallent said once halftime was over, his team played like they did at the start of the game and controlled both sides of the ball for the remainder of the game.

“Everything worked really well,” Tallent said. “At times it seemed like we could do no wrong.”

Tallent said after reviewing the film on Sunday, he charted Metcalfe County with around 111 yards total offence.

“They had about 50 yards rushing on 23 carries, so that’s about two yards per carry which isn’t very good,” Tallent said.

Chase Stines had 18 for 23 passing for 202 yards and a touchdown. Stines also had 14 carries for 120 yards and three rushing touchdowns.

Cameron Matthews, Jason Stearns and Nathan Brown all carried the ball well according to Tallent.

“I think Cameron had the only rushing touchdown,” Tallent said.

Parker Tallent led the way in receiving with 92 yards with five receptions and a touchdown. Matthews had six receptions for 73 yards and Bryson Cross had three receptions for 37 yards.

“We got a lot of people involved,” Tallent said. “Defensively Dakota Miller and Landon Brown each had eight tackles and both of them had two tackles for a loss. Landon also had a sack.”

Tallent said he also wanted to note that kicker/punter Daniel Mazariegos was five for five on extra points.

“I think he’s 10 for 12 on the year and one of those was a bad hold,” Tallent said. “He’s actually only missed one extra point all season. He’s pretty much automatic on extra points and that’s something we haven’t ever had.”

The Clinton County Bulldogs are second in district play as of this week.

The Dawgs will travel to Green County Friday night to take on former head coach Jeremy Whitlow and his team. Green County is currently 0-6 on the year with a loss against Monroe County Friday night, 29-6.

“If we win out in the district and take care of business, we could be playing for the number one seed in the district,” Tallent said. “Four out of the five teams in our district will make the playoffs. The one seed will host the number four seed and the number two seed will host the number three seed.”

The Dawgs have the potential to be at home during the playoffs at least until the third round.

Chase Gibson made a tackle during the first quarter against Metcalfe County on Friday night. Clinton County won the game, 35-0, and move to 2-2 on the year.

Clinton County kicker/punter Daniel Mazariegos kicked an extra point during the first quarter to move Clinton County up 7-0. Mazariegos went five for five on the night.
