Appalachian Test Kitchen

Friday, November 22 /11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Join us for our weekly hands-on test kitchen and test out our food and see what you like best! We will be making a ploughman’s lunch and pickled vegetables. In addition, we will use some recipes from the late 1800s to pickle our own vegetables that you will get to take home.

If you’d like to participate and/or observe in the cooking, join us at 11am when we’ll get set up and start the fire.

If you’d just like to join us for a lunch at the park, stop by around noon and we’ll get you fed! This program is $5 per person and $2 for kids 12 and under.

This a paid program so make sure to sign up in advance at the state park website.

Handprint Turkey Stove Trivet

Saturday, November 23/10:00 a.m.

Join us at the park to make a Thanksgiving turkey themed stove trivet! A trivet is a small plate to protect a table from hot dishes. Make sure you wear clothes you don’t mind getting paint on! We will meet in the park office. This is a free program.

Pine Cone Bird Feeders

Saturday, November 23/11:00 a.m.

Come out and join our interpretive rangers to make a bird feeder from a pine cone to keep our birds happy this winter! We will NOT be using peanut butter due to allergies. We will meet in the park office. This is a free program.

String and Wood Art

Saturday, November 23/12:00 noon

Join Interpretive Rangers Rachel and Abbey and learn how to make a maple leaf design string art on a circular piece of wood. All items will be provided, and the design will be pre-nailed. Be ready to have a great time. This is a free program.

Morning Cave Hike

Sunday, November 24/10:00 a.m.

Join Interpretive Rangers Rachel and Abbey for a moderate hike to the opening of Bunkum Cave. The hike is roughly two miles round trip and will take about an hour and a half to complete. Be sure to wear sturdy shoes and bring plenty of water. We will meet at the trailhead. This is a free program.

Historical Children’s Games

Sunday, November 24/2:00 p.m.

Join Interpretive Rangers Abbey and Rachel and learn about some historical children’s games. We will learn about some fun games that children played in the late 1800s. Come out and try them yourself. This is a free program.

After Thanksgiving Hike:

Deciduous Trees of Bunkum Loop

Friday, November 29/10:00 a.m.

This moderate two mile hike will traverse the Bunkum Loop trail, visiting Bunkum Cave. Along the way, we’ll talk about tree identification methods and investigate examples. If you attended our First Hike 2019, we’ll be reviewing some old favorites and adding some new ones!

Bring sturdy shoes, dress for the weather, and bring a bottle of water. Regardless of the weather, adequate hydration is very important, so make sure to drink extra water starting a few days before our hike.
